there can be no real peace in the

In its well-balanced, rather
lengthy appraisal, LIFE noted:

In New Industry
The Roberta Manufacturing
Co., established at Roberta
through the efforts of the Craw
ford County Development Corp.,
is an example of what local cit
izens, even in very small towns,
can do to secure industry for
Georgia and their home commu
nities, says Scott Candler, secre
tary of the Georgia Department
of Commerce.
“The bringing of this payroll
to two hundred or more women
of the Roberta area means a
great deal to the economy of this
agricultural town and county, to
the merchants, mechanics and
professional people, and to the
banks, utilities and schools,” Mr.
Candler declared.
“With the satellite industries
and- businesses that will spring
up in Roberta as a result of this
new plant, a tax base for Craw
ford County of $2,500,000 will be
provided. Thq stimulated activ
ity will mean the building of
some 300 new homes, the pur
chase of new cars, investment of
millions of new dollars in the
necessities, services and luxuries
of life.
“Important, too, is the fact
that the coming of industry to
Roberta means an increase In
school attendance, particularly in
the high school. This removes
the threat of the non-accrediting
of the high school, an occurence
that would have resulted should
its attendance have been below
100. The new industry in the
town and county also removes
the possibility that many of Ro
berta and Crawford County’s
finest young people would have
Vad to go elsewhere to find em
ployment after finishing their
schooling.”
The Roberta plant was estab
lished when citizens, working
through the Crawford County
Development Corp., erected a
neat, modern factory building
and offered it for lease to a re
liable manufacturer. The East
ern Sportswear Co., a leading
manufacturer of women’s and
children’s apparel, accepted the
lease. So successful has been the
operation in its first six months
that the company is already mak
ing plans to expand.
The Georgia Department of
Commerce is using the Roberta
operation as an example all over
the state of what small towns
can do to help their economy,
Mr. Candler said.
Elsewhere in this newspaper is
carried a photograph of the Ro
berta plant.

insist there is no peace. Israel
does not say she intends to destroy
the Arab world, but it is you who
proclaim your intention to destroy
Israel. It is your holy men who
cry out for holy war against her.
It is your spokesmen who talk of
driving the last Israeli into the
sea. It is you who refuse to accept
Israel’s right to existence. Until
you accept it, you will have no
moral case before the world.”
Meanwhile, despite the Eisen
hower statement, the U. S. con
tinues to procrastinate. Not so the
Arabs. Nasser last week complet
ed his meetings with the Syrian
President and King Saud. They
agreed on certain plans for the
invasion of Israel. However, their
efforts to win over king Hussein
of Jordan have not yet borne
fruit. Some observers fear that
the attempt to break Jordan com
pletely away from Britain with
gold from Saudi Arabia — blood
enemies of the Hashemite clan—
has opened many old wounds.
This may explain, they say, why
the kings of Iraq and Jordan met
recently in a secret hideout.
In a series of five articles pub
lished in The N. Y. Times last
week, Gen. John Bagot Glubb,
ousted Arab Legion Commander,
gave a detailed story of the
events that led to his dismissal.
In His fifth article he concluded
thus: “It was the task of the
agitators - to convince the king
that I was no longer useful. He
could, then, with a clear con
science, get rid of a servant with
whom he never felt quite at ease.
His majesty has since said in an
interview that he sometimes
doubted my loyalty to Jordan. If
he really said this, he was wrong.
For I loved Jordan — and its
king.” ,
Psychological warfare on the
Nazi pattern is being waged daily
against Israel and the West by the
Arab states, it was disclosed in
Washington this week by the
American Zionist Committee for
Public Affairs. Its report stated
that “only towards the Soviet
Union do the Arabs speak with
approval and friendship.”

That there has been some form
of compliance with the Supreme
Court’s order to desegregate the

spent five weeks investigating the
progress of desegregation. They
visited 17 states and the District
