flames.
Nobody wishes us to do this
again.
We in Israel know there is not
going to be any defeat but what
we hope is that the price will
not be so terrible.
He reviewed the potential
which a close of Immigration
would permit the Israeli govern
ment since the funds involved
could be diverted for arms.
But to do so would be to negate
what the state was established
to be—a haven for the oppressed.
People continue to come from
programizod lands. The tyrants do
not know what is going on. The
people will continue to come in
—with your money. This is the
miracle of Israel. The Arabs must
not succeed in closing our gates.
The strain of the costs of these
people on our governmental
budget can be released through
your generosity which is taking
care of these immigrants.
The Arabs have insulted the
Jewish blood and if there is any
comparison betweon Jewish blood
and Arab oil it is that sometimes
there is as much fire in in
sulted Jewish blood as in Arab
oil.
There Is a new spirit in Israel,
no complexes or inferiorities . . .
a new dignity. We are not afraid
of the outcome — but only of the
price.
Let there be no fear in your
hearts of the outcome. . .
The anti-Semite in Arab coun
tries wants Israel to be tolerated.
We do not want to be tolerated.
We want to be respected. We
will not be subjugated to toler
ances. We want to be treated as
equals.
There is nowhere for us to
retreat ... if war comes. You are
our backbone. We are your tower
of strength. . . The price for sur
vival can be reduced to a mini
mum if only you would dedicate
a few hours to the U.J.A. drives
within the next few days.
He described a scene from
“Hill 24 Does Not Answer,” the
surrender of Jerusalem, when the
embattled Israelis, defeated,
marched on Jo surrender into
Arab hands vanquished physical
ly but singing in spiritual triumph.
The Arabs did not understand.
He appealed to American Jew
ry to help in preventing a dis
aster, to allegiate the cost of sur
vival in terms of bloodshed.
But we shall sing, he asserted,
like the vanquished men of Je
rusalem — for the account in the
movie is a true one. We shall sing
best if needed, but in this chorus
your voices are needed. By sing
ing together, we shall swell the
“song of Israel’s triumph.”
A total of $108,000 was credited
to the U.J.A. conference through
contributions made so far this
year by Georgia communities.
This included $1,600 from the
two Jewish families in Barnes-
ville; $1,000 from three families
in Newnan.
Albany recently advanced $710,
Columbus $500, Rome $4,000,
Thomasvillc $500, Columbus $14,-
000, Dalton $1,000, Savannah
$23,000, Atlanta $50,000.
Philip Zelz, chairman of the
Memphis U.J.A. campaign, made
a brief report to the conference.
Barney Medintz, who presided
at the luncheon meeting, paid a
special tribute to the small com
munities for the job they are do
ing and to the field workers who
are aiding in the mobilization of
local support.
