The first Southeastern Region
al Conference of the American
Jewish Committee will be held in
Atlanta April 7 and 8.
Theme of the conference will
be "Southern Jewry at the Cross
roads,” according to Robert H.
Ferst, who is chairman of the
planning committee.
Irving M. Engel, national AJC
president, will make the keynote
speech at the April 7 dinner.
Sunday morning’s session will
be devoted to ‘‘Law and Order in
Today’s South.” Subject for the
luncheon is ‘‘The Middle East
Crisis and Its Impact on Ameri
can Jews,” of a round table dis
cussion “Social Discrimination:
The Last Barrier."
Aiding Mr. Ferst in planning
the conference are Morris Ab
raham, president of the Atlanta
AJC Chapter, William Engel of
Birmingham and David Fleeman
of Miami. Mrs. David Lang Jr.
has been named chairman of
hostesses and Harry Elson chair
man of hosts.

Meets Friday
A meeting of the Special Gifts
group of the Men’s Division, un
der the leadership of Irving Kaler,
Merton Levin, Hyman Meltz, Sol
P. Benamy, William B. Schwartz,
Jr., and Philip Shulhater, is sched
uled for Friday, March 23, at the
office of the Welfare Fund at 41
Exchange Place.
B&P Women, Youth
Hold Report Meets
A meeting of the Business and
Professional group of the Women’s
Division, under the leadership of
Mrs. Adalbert Freedman, Mrs.
Ed. Krick and Dr. Rose Lahman,
was held Thursday evening from
7 to 9 p.m. at the Temple. That
same evening, at 7:30 p.m., the
Youth Division leadership group,
headed by Phyllis Alterman,
Gloria Greenberg, Robert Rosen
thal and Murray Soloman, also
gathered at the Temple to com
plete the organization of their di
vision.
Beth El Plans
Second Seder
Congregation Beth El will hold
its Annual Second Seder at the
Temple Hall, Tuesday March 27
at 7:00 p.m. The program for the
evening will be conducted by
Morris Mitzner, with members of
the congregation taking part. The
event has become a highlight in
the Beth El program.
A traditional Kosher L’Pesach
meal will be prepared and served
by the Beth El Sisterhood. A
number of servicemen are expect
ed to join in the Seder.
In order to help Beth El mem
bers carry out their own first
Seder, a Passover Workshop was
the feature of the regular congre
gation meeting held Thursday
night, March 22.
The following schedule is for
Passover Religious Services. The
services are held at 1650 Briar
Park Ct., N. E. Mr. Mitzner, con
ducting.

Committee meeting at the home
of Benjamin J. Klein, associate

representing JWB. Plans call for
230 at the Seder which is sup
plementing the food sent in with
contributions by the local Jewish

World Jewish Child’s Day was
observed in Columbia on Wednes
day, March 14, with a children’s
party at the Tree of Life Temple
sponsored by the Columbia chap
ter of Hadassah. A puppet show
preceded the serving of ice cream
and punch to all the guests.
The puppet show was sponsor
ed by the Junior League of Col
umbia, a local organization which
performs work for many worth
while causes.
Chairmen for the party was
Mrs. Henry Hammer and her co-
chairman was Mrs. Sam Riebman.
Mrs. Melvin Glass was program
chairman.
Rabbi David Gruber of the
Tree of Life Congregation last
week represented the Jewish
Chautauqua Society as a lecturer
at Morris College, Sumter, S. C.
Rabbi Gruber participated in the
college’s Religious Emphasis
Week.
Rabbi Gruber and Rabbi Marcus
Wald of the House of Peace Syna
gogue also participated in the Re
ligious Emphasis Week activities
at Fort Jackson this past week.
Daily services were conducted at
the Fort all during the week.
The annual Hadassah Rummage
Sale has concluded Assembly
Street location, according to Mrs.
Jerry Nadel, chairman.
Rummage, furniture and all
saleable merchandise are donated
to Hadassah by members of the
Columbia Jewish community and
are offered for sale to the gen
eral public. Recipts from the sales
go towards Hadassah’s many
charities.
Mrs. Manny Shensky is co-
chairman for the sale.
The Daughters of Israel Bene
fit luncheon and card party, which
was held last week at the House
of Peace Social Hall, was termed
a financial success by Mrs. Mar
cus Wald, luncheon chairman. All
proceeds went to the House of
Peace building fund.
Mrs. Melvin Abelove, Mrs. Abe
Zalin and Mrs. Sherman Gordon
were the Columbia delegates to
Hadassah’s Southeastern Region
al Conference which was held
in Augusta.
Other members of the Columbia
Chapter of Hadassah who at
tended the conference include
Mrs. Sol Lourie, Mrs. David Gru
ber, Mrs. Meta Miller, Mrs. Ted
Solomon, Mrs. Lee Baker and
Mrs. Sam Wengrow.
Weinberg of Fort Jackson and
Mrs. Hyman Simon. Kneeling is
the newly elected chairman of the
JWB-ASC, Mrs. Ted Solomon and
Miss Lila Russ. Mrs. Solomon is
the first woman to be elected to
that office in the 39 year history
of the organization.
Men and their families from
Fort Jackson and Shaw Air Force
Base, S.C., will celebrate Pass-
over together with the civilians
and families who are participat
ing in the preparations for the
Seder. Among those guests who
have accepted invitations to the
Seder are Maj. Gen. F. S. Bowen,
Jr., commander of Fort Jackson,
and Mrs. Bowen; Brig. Gen.
James W. Coutts, assistant com
mander, and Mrs. Coutts; Post
Chaplain (Lt. Col.) John N. Hud
son, and Miss Elizabeth Dickey,
Director of the Laurel St. USO.

a son Howard Scott on March 7.

Rev. Philip Rosenblatt on March
14. Mrs. Bernstein is the former
Thelma Lupion of Atlanta.

the arrival of a son Walter Ron
ald on March 17. Mrs. Mayer is
the former Balfoura Friend,
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob
Lion Friend of Shanghai, China,

Georgia. Mr. Mayer is the nep
hew of Mrs. A. J. Garfunkel of
Savannah.
