Issue Survey of
Twelve Detroit
Religious Schools
DETROIT, Mich., (JTA) — “A
Survey of Metropolitan Detroit’s
Religious Schools" has been is
sued here by the Directors Coun
cil, central educational agency of
the Jewish religious schools of
Detroit and its suburbs. The sur
vey is intended to serve as an
administrative and educational
guide and as source material for
researchers.
According to the survey, 6,770
children attended religious (Sun
day) schools. They are taught by
236 teachers: of these 174 teach
one-session and 62 two-session
classes. In addition to the routine
subjects like Jewish religion, Jew
ish history and Israeli studies,
eight schools offer music, five
dramatics and three Hebrew. Four
of the schools meet for one ses
sion and eight for two sessions a
week, the average session lasting
two hours. Ten schools admit non
member children. Four Schools do
not charge tuition to their mem
bers.
The tuition per member child
ranges from $10 to $25 per year,
and for non-member children
from $30 to $50 for a season.
Nine of the schools have junior
and senior department. All of
these either confirm or conse
crate their students.
Former Chattanooga
Lawyer Studying
Baltimore Strike
BALTIMORE — Jerome M. Al-
per, well known Washington at
torney and a former Chattanoog-
an, has been engaged by the
House of Delegates of the Mary
land Legislature as special coun
sel to investigate a transit strike
that has left Baltimore without
mas6 transportation since Janu
ary 20.
Mr. Alpern served with the Se
curities and Exchange Commis
sion in Washington from 1939 un
til 1950 with the exception of
time out for four years of active
duty in the Pacific as a LST com
mander.
After his return to private prac
tice, Alper was called upon in
1955 to make an exhaustive study
and report on the thorny public
transportation problem in the
District of Columbia.
Alper is an honor graduate of
Chattanooga High School and the
University of Chattanooga, finish
ing in 1934 with a Bachelor of
Arts degree. He is the son of Mr.
and Mrs. D. S. Alper and the
brother of Dr. C. H. Alper of
Chattanooga He practiced in Chat
tanooga after finishing at the Uni
versity of Chicago Law School.
YMJ Holds Dance,
Selects Sponsor
The Young Men of Judaea held
their first dance at the Mayfair
Club, Thursday, March 15. Miss
Ellen Balser was selected spon
sor of the club. Miss Renie Blass
and Miss Judy Cohen were chosen
to be on her court. Myron Dwo-
skin, president, presented them
with gifts from the club.
Three dance contests were held.
The mambo or cha-cha contest
was won by Larry Cohen and
Miss Nancy Kaplan; fox trot by
Myron Dwoskin and Miss Ellen
Balser; and Stanley Pollock and
Miss Linda Sims won the jitter
bug.
The YMJ club is led by Milton
Goldman. Other officers are Har
vey Mays, vice president; Stan
ley Pollock, recording secretary;
and Richard Yerlow, treasurer.

Soviet Officials
Blame Beria For
Executing Writers
NEW YORK, (JTA) — The
Jewish Daily Forward has report
ed that it has been definitely
established that two prominent
Yiddish writers — Peretz Mark-
ish and David Hofstein — were
executed in the Soviet Union in
1952, through "a miscarriage of
justice,” upon orders from Lav-
rentia Beria, former Soviet police
chief who was himself executed
after the death of Stalin, on
charges of treason.
3 Years Fs. 60 Lives
DARMSTADT, Germany, (JTA)
—Karl Friedrich Noell, a former
German Army captain, has been
sentenced to three years in jail
in the war-time massacre of 60
to 150 Jewish men, women and
children as alleged Soviet parti
sans.
The execution of the Jews took
place in a town near Smolensk
in the winter of 1941. All the Jews
