He had al ways liked and greedily absorbed Jewish folklore and his heart had beaten faster when reading about the hopes and dreams and frustra tions of his people. So he became associated with the Yiddish Art Theatre in New York and played under the direction of and with Maurice Schwartz. Then his great chance came. He was called on Broadway and after his brilliant performances in “We Americans” and "The Four Walls,” he was asked to play the role of Elmer Rice in “Attorney-at-Law.” He became famous overnight and Hollywood’s golden doors opened wide for him. His first movie was “Scarface” where he played the part of a gangster. Came “Louis Pasteur” followed by "The Life of Emile Zola” (The Dreyfus Case), came Pearl S. Buck's “The Good Earth" where Muni changed into eighteen different masks from the passionate young lover to the tired- out. bowed-down old man. Muni grew into one of the great est theater and movie stars. He won an Oscar for his memorable characterization in the leading role in "They Knew What They Want ed," Pulitzer Prize Play by Sidney Howard (1949). He scored another success in Franz Werfel’s "Juarez and Maxmilian,” the great German drama that had travelled over the stages of the whole world. What has made Paul Muni great? Is it his low, heavy and emphatic speech? Is it the excellent mask specially created for a particular part? Muni himself explains it with simple eloquence: "The great mystery of acting means how an actor escapes from himself and creates another person and how much he thinks and feels his part.” Muni has the habit of building up a scene in his mind and then re act to it as if such scene were ac tual. He confesses: "To plav my role. I have not only to make up my face, I have to get mentally made up as well - and this is the hardest part of all, so much harder than altering the features of my face." In each and every play where he acts, be it Miller’s tragic “Death Of A Salesman" or Tennessee Wil liams' "A Streetcar Named Desire,” Muni always provides at least one unforgettable moment that will linger for many days in the shaken spectator’s mind. After his recent operation. Muni valiantly resumed his work in TV and on Broadway. Every evening, he is greeted enthusiastically in “Inherit The Wind,” a resounding triumph for the great actor, the perfectionist who. although show ered with applause, is never com pletely satisfied with the character- actor par excellence that Paul Muni has been for the past 25 years. His whole life has been so full of creation, relentless labor and genuine enthusiasm, so filled with deep feeling for his imperson ations. that he will always rank among the greatest actors of all time.
