At 760 Washington Street stands
a rambling old brick house dedi
cated to the relief of suffering hu
manity. Over the door is the legend,
•‘OUR LADY OF PERPETUAL
HELP." If you had known the
building since childhood, your eyes
would linger on the words, “Per
petual Help," for you would re
member that always the old build
ing has exemplified those words
in its life and work.
Away back in 1888 was organ
ized the Hebrew Orphans’ Home,
under the leadership of Simon
Wolf, located in this same hand
some red brick building. Ivy cov
ered the walls, and big oaks shad
ed the rolling lawn, in one corner
of which, during its later years, a
Boy Scout hut nestled.
The Home served the six states
of the Southeast, as well as the
District of Columbia, and there the

Atlanta Charitable Association ask

is it that we never have any calls
for help from any of the Jews?”
And the friend answered, “Don’t
you know, sir, that we would be
ashamed to fail to care for our
own?”
The Hebrew Orphans' Home con
tinued for 42 years, until 1930. On
its 1923 Board of Managers were
the following officers, names well-
known in Atlanta for their interest
in civic affairs: M. Frank, Rabbi
David Marx, Harold Hirsch, Oscar
Strauss, Joe Loewus, Max Lowen-
stein, H. J. Haas, Walter Rich, Her
bert G. Schiff, Armand May, as
well as the following women: Mes-
dames B. Z. Phillips. H. C. Sommer,
Percy Rich, Sig Samuels.
By 1930 these men and women,
who were so much concerned with
the well-being of their charges, had
become convinced that an institu
tion, no matter how well admin
istered, could not give children as
normal and happy a life as indi-
