Columbia to Dedicate Center
At Exercises on April 15
Groundbreaking ceremonies for
the Columbia Jewish Center will
be held on Sunday, April 15, at
3:30 p.m. with a major portion of
the Columbia Jewish community
expected to attend.
Construction of the impressive
project, which will serve as an
athletic and social center for cen
tral South Carolina, has actually
already been begun. Completion
of the 35’ x 75’ swimming pool is
expected by June. The modern,
completely air conditioned build
ing will be completed by Sep
tember.
The Columbia Jewish Center is
located well back on a four-acre
plot of land in the 4500 block of
Trenholm Road. The building
will contain some 23,000 square
feet of floor space and will con
tain a combination gymnasium-
auditorium, dining room find
kitchen, lounge, showers and
dressing rooms, and club rooms
for youth and adult organizations.
Designed and engineered by
Lyles, Bissctt, Carlisle & Wolff,
Columbia architects-enginers, the
Center will be constructed by the
M. B. Kahn Construction Com
pany of Columbia. Mr. Kahn
headed both the fund-raising
committee and building commit
tee and he will supervise the
construction.
The Center, established to serve
the social, recreational and cul
tural needs of the community
will be operated independently
of the other two House of Peace
units which will be erected on
the site - a new Synagogue and
an educational building- in order
that its facilities and services will
be available to members of other
congregations.
Marjorie Russ, daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Joe Russ of Columbia,
will represent Alpha Kappa So
rority in the University of South
Carolina May Day festivities.
“Room Service,” a three-act
play being produced by Hadas-
sah, will be presented Saturday,
April 14, nt Drayton Hall. It is
expected to be the seventh
straight Hadassah hit play to be
directed by Frank Harris.

an associate in the well-known
Columbia law firm, Fulmer and
Barnes. Mr. Lourie was admitted
to the S. C. Bar in December,
1955. He completed his require
ments for his LLB degree in Jan
uary, 1956.
Lourie is a native of St. George,
and was graduated from St.
George High School. He entered
the University of South Carolina
in February, 1951. While at U.S.C.,
he was elected president of the
student body, vice president of
the law federation and president
of Phi Epsilon Pi social fraternity.
He is a member of Phi Delta Phi
National Legal Fraternity, B’nai
B’rith, the Jaycees and the House
of Peace Synagogue.
Ginsberg, Brandon,
Smith Announce
New Law Firm
Paul Ginsberg, Frank W. Bran
don, Jack Bryan Smith and
Judge Andrew W. Callaway this
week announced they have form
ed a new law firm—Ginsberg,
Brandon & Smith.
The firm is the successor to
the former firm of Ginsberg &
Rose and will retain the entire
staff of the latter as well as the
quarters at 1310 Atlanta Federal
Savings Building.
Mr. Ginsberg, former Assistant
Attorney General of the State of
Georgia, is a past national com
mander of the Jewish War Vet
erans. He holds LLB and LLM
degrees and has practiced in At
lanta since 1930. He recently
wrote “Wake Up, America” after
a round-the-world trip during
which he interviewed most of the
presidents and premiers of the
free nations. He is a veteran of
World War II.
Mr. Brandon, who was admitted
to the bar in 1980, was formerly
associated with the firm of Dil
lon, Calhoun & Dillon. He served
as judge of the Atlanta Munici
pal Court, resigning to reenter
private practice.
Mr. Smith is a graduate of
Emory University. He has been
associated with Mr. Ginsberg in
the practice of law for the past
four years. He is a major in the
Air Force Reserve, having served
in combat in World War II.
Judge Callaway is widely known
in the legal profession, having
served with the Atlanta Munici
pal Criminal Court for 32 years,
before his retirement.
Two other attorneys will later
become associated with the firm.

Mentally Retarded Children as
the regular teacher underwent
surgery.

Flag presentation ceremonies
were held last week at the Adas
Yeshuron Synagogue. The Aug
usta Post of Jewish War Veterans
presented the U. S. Flag by Sam
Silverstein, and the flag of Israel
was presented by the Augusta
Zionist organization by Louis Kay-
nard.

Mr. Massell is president of the
Atlanta Jewish Welfare Fund.
