were it not a true story, it might
almost be a fairy tale.
It is a story of a boy, born in
a distant and most ancient land,
ruled by a ruthless monarch. The
land, which is a real one, is called
Yemen and there, one day, a
child was born to a family of
Jews, as poor and as wickedly
exploited as are all the Jews of
this distant land. His parents
named him Shalom and were
most proud of him. But their
pride became even greater when
one of the old and bearded sages
of their wretched community
looked at Shalom and told them
that this one, this son, would
grow to be a great man and
would bring honor and fame to
them and to his people. And the
parents, looking at their little
boy, believed the old man and
waited for Shalom to grow and

But times were bad and life
was hard for the Jews of Yemen
and soon, before Shalom was even
six years old, his parents, to
gether with their friends and
relatives, rose in a great mass and
began the longest of all walks
in modern times—the walk to the
port city of Aden on the Red
Sea whence they would depart
for the State of Israel, which
was not even six years old it
self. They walked and they walk
ed — hiking into the future and
paying for their liberation with
exhaustion and sickness and with
death. For only Shalom and his
mother, of all their family, sur
vived the walk to Aden. But at
least the ordeal was at an end
and Israel was in sight and there
Shalom grew to strength and
health and became an agile
youngster like all the other Jew
ish children in Israel.
And as it is given to all chil
dren to possess a special gift, so
Shalom’s gift were his lithe, fast
legs — those same legs that had
stumbled and tripped on the long
walk to Aden across the desert.
Of all the children in his school,
Shalom was the fastest runner.
His friends, and even his teach
ers, looked at the little Yemenite
boy and said that never had they
seen one who ran with such speed
and grace. And although no one
had trained him, Shalom seemed
to run everywhere. In every lo
cal match and all the competi
tions. And then one day, Shalom
entered the Israel marathon race
and won it! He was a national
champ!
It seemed logical when, a little
later in New York City — in a
land even more distant than Ye
men — it was decided to organ
ize a ‘‘Salute to Israel” day dur
ing which a runner from Israel
would present a torch to the
Mayor of New York on behalf
of the people of the Jewish State
—Shalom was chosen. And Sha
lom Kahalany, the young man
with the speedy legs and the
gentle face and the bright eyes
who had been told so many yeqjrs
ago by a wise and reverend sage
that he would grow to bring hon
or and fame to his family, inevi
tably was chosen to present the
symbolic gift to the Mayor of the
vast city across the sea.
But in America, men who had
studied the art of running for
many years, saw Shalom run and
they were astonished, for here
was an untrained boy who ran
like a champion, almost as though
his legs carried him so from
birth. And they watched and
checked and finally they told
Shalom. They told him he needed
training and style and work and
good food — and that when he
had all these he would be ready
to run with the champions of the
world, perhaps at the Olympics,
and that there perhaps he would
win and bring a wreath home for
the State of Israel. And Shalom
listened and was not very sur
prised, for his mother, all his
life, had told him of that which
had been forecast for him in the
land of Yemen by a wise old man.
The story has no moral. There
is nothing to be read into it. It
has no end, even. For Shalom
Kahalany, the young immigrant
from Yemen is now in America,
being coached and trained and
made fit and trim to run what
may be the greatest race of his
life. And who knows, maybe he
will become a world champion
— the only one whose very first
steps were on that longest walk
of all, the walk to Freedom.
