Career of Service
to Community
The forthcoming Testimonial
Dinner for Abe Goldstein, Wed
nesday, June 6 at 7 p.m. in the
Mayfair Club, will be an im
portant landmark in the busy
life of a beloved and respected
leader of the Jewish community
of Atlanta.
This historic event will
also provide the members of
the community an excellent op
portunity to recapitulate the
growth, the achievements, per
haps some of the disappointments,
of the past three decades of Jew
ish life in Atlanta. For it is
practically impossible to list one
important activity of this nature
in that 30 year period which does
not owe something to the vitality
and generosity of Abe Goldstein.
His wife Rubye relates that
shortly after they were married,
she asked Abe if he intended to
do some of the fine things her
father, the late Leon Eplan,
had been doing. He replied in
the affirmative, but even Rubye
is still amazed at the scope of
her husband’s many-and varied
good works.

In his industry, Abe has been

as the Congregation’s president
from 1942 until 1945. He remains
a member of the Board.
A staunch worker for Israel,
Abe Goldstein has been actively
involved in the Israel Bond ef
fort since its inception. Today,
chairman of organizations, he is
a past co-chairman for which
he was awarded a placque by
the State of Israel.
Abe Goldstein is president of
the Atlanta Jewish Community
Council and recently was elect
ed to the presidency of the Jew
ish Home for the Aged, distinct
ions earned by many years of
service to these organizations. In
1948, Abe was chairman of the
Jewish Welfare Fund. This was
the year of the Fund’s greatest
fund raising achievement — over
$1,006,000. He is still an active
Fund figure, serving as vice
president.
One of Abe Goldstein’s chief
interests is B’nai B’rith. President

His support of Israel, however,
is based on neither of these sym
pathies, but on his conviction,
one shared by many of our coun
try’s important political figures,
that, "Israel has stood fast as a
bulwark of freedom in this stra
tegic crossroads area of the
world.”
Senator Sparkman, in a reoent
speech at Washington, D.C., re
iterated his position, saying:
“We cannot afford to overlook
this important fact: Israel has
shown her willingness to stand
fast for freedom against Ifce on-
sweep of Communism.”
We will be honored by this
courageous American who lends
his time and eloquence to Israel's
cause.
