This week I am celebrating an
anniversary in my rabbinical ca
reer. Fifteen years ago I was or
dained “Rabbi in Israel.” Is this
anniversary any different than
my previous fourteen? I would
have to reply in the negative.
Nothing unusual has transpired
except that another year has
passed.
I recall when I was ordained
that I asked myself many ques
tions about the future. Where will
I be ten, fifteen, twenty years
hence? Will I have accomplished
anything of note? Will any part

of my youthful idealism be real
ized? Any goals accomplished? I
tried to make some predictions,
but it was all so mysterious and
thrilling. My journey into the
future had all the earmarks of
an adventure into the unknown
which could prove disastrous or
successful, but would undoubted
ly contain elements of both.
As I look back, I must admit
it never dawned on me that fif
teen years hence I would be serv
ing a Southern community and
supervising a section of our coun
try on behalf of Liberal Judaism.
I did not visualize that I would
even attempt to attain the covet
ed deree Doctor of Philosophy,
certainly not receiving it, or that
I would have authored two books,
or have a television program dis
pensing information on Judaism,
or that it would have been, nec
essary to serve as Chaplain in
our armed forces, or that I would
have been on the staff of a psy
chopathic hospital, or have made
a survey for the National Jewish
Welfare Board, or have been an
active participant in many other
organizations as the Zionist Or
ganization of America and the
National Conference of Christ
ians and Jews. I could not be
lieve that I would be touched so
deeply by the joys and sorrows
of the many people in whose lives
I have been involved because of
my profession. Much has tran
spired during the past decade and
a half.
Can I sit back and say, “Well,
I’ve contributed my bit” and let
it go at that? No, I’m afraid not. I
may, in all modesty, have done
much, but there is so much more
to do. One’s labors, especially in
the rabbinate, are never complete.
The challenge to withstand the
devasting forces of apathy, and
even antipathy, to our faith is
ever present. There is an ever
present need- to educate our
youth and adults, to guide and
minister to them, and to propo-
gate our faith. These labors are
never done. “The day is short,
but the work is plentiful,” say
our sages. And for the oppor
tunity to be part of this great
work for God and our people I
shall ever be grateful. For in
reality, fifteen years are as noth
ing as compared to the thousands
of years our people have strug
gled for survival and at the same
time have made major contribu
tions to the welfare of humanity.
When a merchahdise establish
ment celebrates having been open
for business one, five, ten, fifteen
or more years, the owner usually
runs a sale, selling his wares at
bargain prices to the public. For
the clergy, this is understandably
an impossible procedure. Prayers
are not commodities to be sold
by case lots. Nor would there be
a tremendous demand for them,
even at sale prices. But may I
assure you, my congregation, that
you are in my prayers.
