National Honors Come to Ed Kahn
We congratulate Edward M. Kahn upon his elevation to
the number one spot among Jewish social workers. His elec
tion to the presidency of the National Conference of Jewish
Communal Services climaxes a brilliant career which covers
a span of thirty-six years.
After graduating from the Brooklyn Law School at the
age of 19, ne chose social service as his career. He pursued
his academic studies in several colleges, finishing at the Uni
versity of Chicago’s Graduate School for Social Service Ad
ministration in 1923. He had already had several years’ active
participation in his field. In 1928 he became executive director
lor the Federation for Jewish Social Service in Atlanta. As
the need for expanded services grew in Atlanta, he took on
the added responsibilities of executive secretary of the Jewish
Welfare Fund in 1936 and of the Jewish Community Council
in 1945.
Although these are his major professional jobs, he has
directed his talents to teaching, B’nai B’rith, the Jewish Chil
dren’s Service, the Atlanta Bureau of Jewish Education and
many other organizations, some of them national and pro
fessional in scope.
His capacity to spur creativity among the leadership of
his community and his staff long ago won him national at
tention and his election is a formal recognition of a life-time
of inspired and devoted service.
The Southern Israelite is proud to note this national ac
claim for a man who has given such dedication to building
up positive values within his community and the surrounding
states. His election is indeed an honor for Mr. Kahn, his city
—and the South.

AMBULANCE SERVICE
1270 Spring St., N. W.
TR. 6-4311
The ceremony will take place
at 9:30 p.m. at Or Ve Shalom
Synagogue, where the Beth El
Congregation holds worship ser
vices. The public is invited.
Participating will be Allan
Heffler, Abe Kraar, Harry
Schreibman and Ronald Schle-
singer.
The ceremony will deviate
from the familiar ritual atten
dant to thirteenth birthday cele
brations, according to Synagogue
officials, but will bear the sim
ilarity of a sense of dedication
and an announcement of the
“full acceptance of personal re
sponsibility in Judaism.”
The decision to prepare and
conduct such a service was or
iginated with the participants
themselves after a “period of sin
cere consideration.”
None of the group had been
Bar Mitzvahed as a youth, “be
ing the product of a generation
which felt less attachment to
tradition.”
The four, the official said, now
adult with families of their own,
“have come to a mature belief in
their faith and responsibilities
inherent in Judaism. These con
cepts were reached after all had
participated in Beth El’s adult
education program, gaining both
knowledge of a factual nature
and insight into the implications
of that knowledge.

ite realization and recognition of

Behind The Torah Curtain
by Rabbi Abraham J. Feldman
Editor, The Jewish Ledger, Hartford, Conn.
These thoughts were
suggested by the “paroches” or
the “Torah Curtain” and the dif
ference between it and l’havdil,
other curtains of which we have
been hearing much in recent
years.
We believe that it was Sir
Winston Churchill who coined the
phrase, “The Iron Curtain,” by
which he meant the ideological
barrier which the Soviet Union
has set up between the Western
world, the satellite nations, and
the Soviet itself. The image
which this phrase suggests is that
of a curtain of iron dropped be
tween lands in the Soviet orbit
and the West, one that cannot be
penetrated and through which
the passage of ideas and ideals
is obstructed. Behind this figura
tive curtain, peoples are forced to
do the will of cliques who neither
consult them nor consider them,
where thought is regimented,
where individuals are perman
ently policed and spied upon,
where human beings are but cogs
in an impersonal system which
operates ruthlessly. Behind the
iron curtain, the words “free
dom," “peace,” “democracy,"
have directly opposite meanings
to what we have been taught
they have. There, what we have
believed tor be ethical standards
in human relationships as repre
sented by “word of honor,” agree
ment," “treaties,” have no vali
dity. The standard prevailing
and enforced is: Keep your word
—if it pays off. Keep your agree
ment—if it serves your purpose.
Honor treaties—if they are ad
vantageous to the state; reject
them if that be the more advan
tageous policy.
A DIFFERENT CIVILIZATION
In other words, the civilization
behind the iron curtain is dif
ferent from anything that we
know. It is a mechanized civili
zation from which the Judeo-
Christian values are deliberately
and systematically excluded.
Since China became communiz-
ed and shut off from direct con
tact with our society, people have
also been speaking of “The Bam
boo Curtain," which in essence
is the far Eastern synonym for
“Iron Curtain.”
About ten years ago, Mr. Bart
ley Crum wrote a book which he
called “Behind the Silken Cur-
Mr. Crum meant the world of
tain.” By “The Silken Curtain,”

diplomacy. These “silken cur
tains” which exist in every coun
try shut out the citizenry of each
from what is planned and done
in the chancelleries and foreign
offices of the nations. In that
book, Mr. Crum dealt only with
those deeds and acts which dealt
with Israel before it declared its
independence in 1948, and what
he wrote was based on his ex
perience as a member of the An
glo-American Commission for
Palestine. The story told by Mr.
Crum, a distinguished California
lawyer and a Roman Catholic by
religion, was a story that was not
pretty. He told of duplicity be
hind the silken curtains, of the
attempted betrayal of the Jewish
community of Palestine. It was a
story of double-talk and double
dealing, not too unlike that which
we have learned to expect from
behind the iron and bamboo cur
tains, but which is especially
shocking when it is ascribed to
leaders of Western democracies.
Now, we Jews also have a cur
tain. We have had it for many,
many centuries. It is called the
“paroches;” “the Torah Curtain.”
Figuratively, this curtain sets us
apart from others. But, notice;
in this separation from motiva
tion is utterly different from that
which prevails behind the iron,
the bamboo, or silken curtains.
The motivation behind the Torah
Curtain is not the lust for power
to be wielded over others; it is
not the desire to regiment peo
ples or individuals; it is not the
curbing of freedoms. The moti
vation behind the Torah Curtain
is self-discipline. It is the estab
lishment of justice on earth. It
is the full establishment of so
ciety as the kingdom of the Al
mighty. The motivation behind
the Torah Curtain is that which
the civilized world has approved
as the over-all universal goal of
the achievement of ideals for all
mankind.
HEART OF JEWRY SOUND
We do not claim that all Jews
are righteous, just or sinless; we
know better! We do not claim
that we Jews do not have unprin
cipled creatures in our midst;
we know some. Yes, some of these
even dare to wrap themselves in
the paroches, the Torah Curtain,
for other purposes than the pur
suit of Torah and its precepts.
But these are recognized by Jews
for what they are; they are iden
tified as “phonies” by all men.
The heart of Jewry, of the k’lal,
is sound; and when we are con
fronted with corruption, injus
tice, duplicity, dishonesty, then
from behind and before the Torah
Curtain a mighty voice is heard,
“Thus saith the Lord: They shall
not hurt nor destroy in all of
God’s holy mountain.” And the
conscience and instinct of the
Jewish people responds with “All
that the Lord hath spoken we
shall do.” Behind the Torah Cur
tain is the Torah, the Law, the
Law which bids us hearken unto
the voice of God, the Father, to
love His children, to right the
wrongs, to establish the right.
There is a vast difference be
tween that which'is behind the
Torah Curtain and that which is
behind the other curtains in so
ciety.
