Southeastern Zionists Slate
Executive Meet in Atlanta
The Spring meeting of the
Southeast Region, Zionist Org
anization of America, Adminis
trative Committee, will take place
at the Mayfair Club in Atlanta,
on Sunday, June 10, according
to Harry Jaffe of Birmingham,
chairman of the Administrative
Committee.
The sessions will start at 10:00
a.m. during which time the va
rious committees will report their
activities for the year.
A luncheon has been planned
at the Mayfair Club at 1 p.m. at
which time Mr. Mortimer May of
Nashville, national president of
the Zionist Organization of Amer
ica will discuss the important de
cisions made at the World Zion
ist Congress recently held in Je
rusalem. Mr. May led the ZOA
delegation at the recent twenty-
fourth Congress.
On Saturday night, June 9, the
Atlanta Zionist District will be
host to a reception in honor of
the visiting delegates from the
Southeast Region, according to
Ben Golden, President of the Dis
trict. Assisting Mr. Golden on
arrangements will be Joe Gross,
Max Robkin, Morris Mitzner,
Malcolm Minsk, Dr. Sidney Q.

Mr. and Mrs. Edward Zelick
Coonin of Norfolk, Va., announce
the engagement of their daughter
Rochelle Fay Coonin, to Herbert
Mitchell Smullian of Jackson
ville, formerly of Atlanta.
Miss Coonin attended Boston
University and the University of
Pennsylvania. Mr. Smullian serv
ed as a major in the U. S. Army.
He is president of the Smullian
Building Supply Company of
Jacksonville and chairman of the
board of a Jacksonville Building
material firm.
The wedding will take place
on June 10.

AUGUSTA NEWS
Two Jewish films were shown
at the Community Center last
week. A Square Dance was held
on Saturday night.
Saturday Evening, June 9, will
be “Iz Shapiro Night” at the
Y. M. H. A., where a tribute will
be paid to Mr. Shapiro who has
been a staunch worker in the
creation of the “Y.”
Mrs. I. D. Shapiro, a national
Hadassah leader, received a
medical center building certifi
cate and a lifetime membership
in Hadassah last week when the
local organization held its clos
ing meeting of the season.
Parents of members of the
Minyon Club were honored with
a breakfast at the closing Minyon
Club meeting of the season at
the Adas Yeshuron Synagogue.
Maxwell Estroff has been
elected a vice president of the
Georgia National Life Insurance
Co. in Atlanta.
Young Judaea is planning a
week-end of entertainment this
week, beginning with a swimming
party on Saturday night, a picnic
on Sunday at Lake Olmstead, and
ending with crowning of the king
at the King Dance.
The Walton Way Temple Kin
dergarten observed the gradua
tion of its students last week with
a skit portraying the dilemma of
a class who had no plans for a
graduation program. The gradu
ates were: Roberta Bregman,
Sylvia Carpenter, Daniel Choate,
Angela Coursey, Jane Darling,
Jill Dobson, James Gosney, John
Hagler, Robert Heller, Lawrence

Honors
Jerome Maurice Cooper of Sa
vannah has been awarded a Full-
bright Award to study architec
ture in Atlanta at the University
of Rome, Italy. He is a Georgia
Tech graduate.
Prize For Sculptor
NEW YORK, (JTA) — Chaim
Gross, noted Jewish sculptor and
painter, has been awarded a
$1,000 prize for sculptor by the
National Institute of Arts and
Letters. The award, one of sev
eral such prizes made in various
fields of the arts, was presented
gt the annual prize-award cere
mony of the Institute.
Mr. Gross came to this country
in 1921 and received his early
art training at the Educational
Alliance on tyew York’s East
Side. His work is exhibited in a
number of museums, including
the Tel Aviv Museum and the
Bezalel Museum in Jerusalem.
Julian Richard Friedman, son
of Mr. and Mrs. W. Leon Fried
man of Savannah, has been
awarded a scholarship to the
University of Chicago Law
School. He is a senior at Emory
University.
Edwin J. Feiler Jr. of Savan
nah has been named the out
standing ROTC graduate at the
University of Pennsylvania.
Nathan Rabhan has received
ohe of two awards offered the
freshmen achieving the most in
chemistry at Armstrong College
in Savannah where he has finish
ed his freshman year.
Ellis B. Hirsh son of' Mr. and
Mrs. S. H. Hirsh of Atlanta grad
uated this past week Cum Laude
from Webb School in Bell Buckle,
Tenn.
Ellis, active in many school ac
tivities, was vice president of his
debating society, monitor of his
dormitory, assistant news editor
of his school paper and a member
of the Student Council.
