Ga., N.C., S.C., Fla. Winners Listed

Warden in Israel Court
HENDERSONVILLE — The
scene was the fifth annual com
bined District Five BBG-AZA
convention which was held in
Hendersonville, North Carolina
at Camp Blue Star June 20 - 26.
More than 200 boys and girls,
ranging in ages -from 13 through
21, and staff from Florida, Georg
ia, North Carolina, South Carolina,
Maryland, Virginia, and Washing
ton, D. C., attended. The 6-day
convention featured one day of
miscellaneous activities, two days
of bunk programming, and two
days of business meetings. The
Sabbath was a true “day of rest,”
and an Institute of Judaism was
conducted on that day. Special
time was allotted for socials and
recreation.
On the evening of the banquet
many outstanding presentations
were made. But there was one
award that all BBG chapters in
the District were tensely waiting
to hear. Approximately fifty
BBG chapters in District Five
are permitted to compete for the
coveted Claire Goldstein best-
all-round chapter trophy, which
is presented to the chapter
which, during the course of the
year, mSst closely follows the all
round seven-fold program of Re
ligion, Culture, Athletics, Social,
Inter-Faith, B’nai B’rith Cooper
ation, and Community Service.
This year the cherished award
went to Atlanta B’nai B’rith Girls
No. 176. This was the second time
this group received this award.
The theme of the convention was
“AZA-BBG - Five and Seven
Fold Program.” Although this
was the fifth joint convention
of the boys and girls, actually
it was the 21st AZA convention
and the 13th BBG annual con
vention.

Let’s Keep
of the Claire Goldstein award,
many other honors and awards
were bestowed during the course
of the convention to Southern
Region chapters, which comprise
the states of North Carolina,
South Carolina, and Georgia.
In the BBG Storytelling con
test, Elaine Gilner of Atlanta No.
176 placed third. Carolyn Taffel,
also of Atlanta No. 176, placed
second in the Discussion con
test. Subject of the BBG Dis
cussion was “The UN.—Answer
to World Peace?”
In the song contests Savannah
BBG No. 39 came in second place
in the alma mater and comic song
division. Columbus BBG No. 350
placed second in the pep song
contest. Atlanta BBG No. 176
placed first in the pep song and
third in the comic song catego
ries. In the BBG scrapbook con
test Atlanta No. 176 placed second
with Lena Karesh BBG of Col
umbia, placing third. In the BBG
newspaper contest Atlanta No. 176
placed first, Columbus No. 350
placed second, and the newest
BBG chapter in the District, JOJ
BBG of Atlanta placed third. At-
No. 176 placed second in the In
ter-faith award followed by Col
umbus No. 350 in third place. For
the community service award Col
umbus No. 350 was the winner,
and tda Saul BBG No. 314 of At
lanta came in second place.

tenstein ABA No. 518 of Atlanta.

came in second place in the ora
tory contest.

North Carolina, were presented
with District Life Membership at
a special ceremony honoring them.
Among the incoming District
BBG officers are Sandy Towsner,
Silver Spring, Md. - President,
Elaine Gilner, and Gloria Green
berg, both of Atlanta No. 176, -
vice presidents. This is the first
time in the history of District
Five B’nai B’rith girls that a girl
from Atlanta was elected to a
District office.
Among the new District Five
JERUSALEM, (JTA) — When
George Holzer, who is serving a
sentence in Ramie Prison, got
into an argument with the warden
and lost certain privileges, in
cluding a four-a-day cigarette
ration, he went right to the Su
preme Court for an order nisi
calling on the prison governor to
show cause why he should not
cease depriving Holzer of his cig
arettes.
The prisoner personally argu
ed his case before the three-man
Supreme Court. Evidence heard
by the court showed that the
To Add New Wing To
Cleveland Hospital
CLEVELAND, (JTA) — A 10-
story addition to Mt. Sinai Hos
pital here will be completed be
tween October 1958 and April
1959, it was announced this week
at the institution’s annual meet
ing. The new wing will add 185
beds, raising the hospital’s ca
pacity to 533 beds and 112 bas
sinets. The hospital’s develop
ment fund campaign has already
reached its goal of $4,811,000.

Matz, Baltimore, and counselor -
George Lefcoe, Miami. Area
chairman are Joel Piassick for
Atlanta, Columbus and Macon;
Harvey Yashik for Augusta,
Charleston, Columbia, and Sa
vannah; Eddie Manning for the
state of North Carolina.

prisoner had refused to perform
labor assigned him by the prison
authorities and, as a result, had
been deprived of privileges. He
told the court he refused to do
the work because It might injure
his hands and so impair his tal
ents as a pianist.
The court heard the prisoner
sympathetically but denied his
petition. The presiding judge sug
gested, however, that the warden
and the prisoner get together and
see if they couldn’t reach agree
ment on a suitable form of labor.
