Parley Considers
Week Leadership
LOS ANGELES, (JTA) — The
“weaknesses” of today’s American
Jewish leadership were discussed
at a recent four-day national in
stitute arranged at Brandeis Camp
in Santa Susanna, California,
which was attended by more than
100 Jewish leaders from every
part of the country.
The discussion centered around
an analysis given by Rabbi Mor
ris Adler of Detroit, who cited
inadequacies he felt were pres
ent “but not necessarily preva
lent” among today’s leadership.
Included were: Jack of an ade
quate background in Jewish life
out of which to make decisions
and establish policies that reflect
Jewish thought and experience;
a paternalist attitude toward con
stituents; self-assurance that ad
mits of no dissent; and a “stand-
pat” attitude not sufficiently re
sponsive to new needs and new
ideas.
In addition, he took exception
to top positions for “frequent
absent leaders who are in evi
dence only at the great functions
and public demonstrations and
abdicate much of their responsi
bility to professional directors.”
Rabbi Adler urged the assembled
Jewish leadership "to make the
traditions of the past applicable
to the present and to retain a
measure of open-mindedness
which will enable them to wel
come new ideas.”
He Should*ve Quit
While He Was Ahead
BEERSHEBA, (JTA) — A re
sident of Beersheba learned last
week that, when you’re dealing
with customs officials, it’s al
ways better to quit while you’re
still ahead — even if you think
you’re behind. The whole mat
ter came up when the resident
got a gift from South America
—a pack of cards. The customs
duty was 7 Israel pounds. He
thought that was a little stiff,
so he asked if they would not
please reconsider the matter. Fi
nally he got his reply: “We re
gret to Inform you that a mistake
has occured. The duty should
have been 7.6 Israel pounds, not
7 Israel pounds. Please remit the
difference.”
Six Bat Yam Life
Guards Get Ovation
For Hard Day*s Work
BAT YAM, (JTA) — Six life
guards received an ovation here
last week after they had saved
dozens of persons from drowning
in unusuaily rough seas off Bat
Yam.
The six guards were pn duty
all day, and eight persons they
rescued required treatment at
the Magen David Adorn station
on the beach.
Some 40,000 peisons gathered
on the shore and anxiously watch
ed as the guards came back time
after time with those they had
rescued an I greeted them with
salvos of applause and loud
cneering.

Recruiting of Druze
Youth Reported
Above Expectations
JERUSALEM, (JTA) — The
recruiting of Druze youths in,to
the Israel Army has succeeded
beyond expectations, it was re
ported in the Jerusalem Post
here. The response was so great,
according to an article by Gideon
Weigert, that it caused the army
financial and manpower prob
lems before all the Druze recruits
could be absorbed into the mi
nority unit. The article said that
it was believed that the Israel
themselves as atheists or Christ
ians.
The figures made known by the
East Berlin Community show
that the Jewish population in the
parts of Germany under Com
munist rule has shrunk by at
least one-fifth since 1952. Most
of the diminution is accounted
for by the flight of some 500
Jews, including almost all the old
community leaders, during the
high tide of Soviet anti-Semitism
in 1952-53, just prior to the death
of Stalin. There is also a steady
excess of deaths over births.
NEW YORK, (JTA) — The Is
raeli Consulate here cancelled to
day the scheduled appearance of
Arthur Liveran, a member of the
Israeli delegation to the United
Nations, at a forum in New Hamp
shire because it had learned that
the hotel in which the affair was
to be held discriminated against
American Jewish guests.
Supreme Court’s rejection of an
appeal by two Druze conscripts
had convinced the Druze com
munity that the Israel government
intended to enforce conscription.
At the same time, the report
said, authorities had not honored
their promises to distribute one-
dunam plots and loans to dis
charged Druze soldiers, nor had
the rehabilitation of local Druze
been carried out efficiently. The
Druze community is now seeking
official status like other religious
minorities.
Another volunteer group is now
being organized by the youth of
the Greek Catholic community.
The first group of these youths
is already undergoing training
and more units are in the pro
cess of formation.
