Welcoming Iraq’s
King to London
. LONDON, (JTA) — The
magnificent welcome accorded
King Felsal of Iraq as he ar
rived here on July 16 on a
formal visit of state was not
without its touch of irony.
A handsomely printed address
of welcome was presented to
the monarch by a delegation
from London County Council,
headed by Council chairman
Mrs. Norman Bentwich, a Jew
and wife of the Anglo-Jewish
leader Prof. Norman Bentwich.

We call upon the Association’s

this blemish from the group's
honorable record and to remain
true to the democratic ideals of
its courageous founders. The As

Sun-burned or Not?
Given time and a fair oppor
tunity to demonstrate the grow
ing liberal sentiment in the
South, that which the Supreme
Court ruled as un-constilutional
will be upheld by the South. We
are one people, one nation. Ex
tremists on both sides endanger
the balances. Our Jewish popu
lation in the South knows liber
alism, know3 what the minority
status means equally as well as
those who live outside the South.
No pronouncement from New
York or Atlantic City is going to
change the picture one iota. We
are not going to aid in better un
derstanding if we persist in damn
ing the definite objectives of
loyal liberalism which demands
this time and this patience and
this understanding.

Jews In Montreal
Move To Suburbs;
96,000 In City
MONTREAL, (JTA) — The
movement of Montreal Jews to
ward the western suburbs of the
city, discernible by 1951, has con
tinued unabated and has spread
from what was a former narrow
strip within the city to a far wid
er area, it was revealed here in
a population study carried on
under the auspices of the Cana
dian Jewish Congress. The total
number of Jews in Montreal this
year is estimated at 96,000 .
The movement of Montreal
Jews to new areas of the city
has brought with it a corres
ponding movement of synagogues,
schools and recreational facili
ties. Of 16 new synagogues built
in the suburbs in the past five
years, only four were establish
ed by new congregations. The re
mainder were set up by congre
gations whose members had
moved to the newer residential
areas.

by George L. Levison, vice-pres

Ask Ike to Call
Educator Parley
On Desegregation
President Eisenhower has been
urged to call a conference of
Southern leaders ‘ limited to edu
cators and school Administrators”
to deal with “human relations
problems which Southern public
schools will have to face in the
desegregation process ordered by
the U. S. Supreme Court”.
The request to the White House
came from Dr. George L. Cross,
president of the University of
Oklahoma, and Henry Edward
Schultz, national chairman of the
Anti-Defamation League of B’nai
B’rith. It was made on behalf
of 125 Southern educators who
had attended the South - wide
Conference on Human Relations
held at the University in Norman,
Oklahoma, in June. The confer
ence had been sponsored jointly
by the University and the League.
In reporting to the President
on the Oklahoma conference, Dr.
Cross declared that “it is indeed
significant that so many Southern
educators welcomed the opport
unity to discuss desegregation
problems.”
“The conference was success
ful,” he said, “in that it enabled
the men and women who attend
ed to tackle their problems in a
constructive manner. They had
an opportunity for exchange of
views and experiences that pro
vided them with new insights
into the problem of human re
lations in the integration process
which schools in some states have
already undertaken and which
those in others must meet. The
conference did not seek to ifess
resolutions or to plan new gen
eralized action. It was essent
ially a process in self-education.”
Thanking the President for the
message he had sent to the edu
cators, Dr. Cross declared that it
“brought forth expressions that
those who are seeking peaceful
and successful means of conform
ing with the law would be im-
measureably strengthened by
moral support from the White
House.”
