Call of the Community Chest Drives
This is Community Chest time throughout this country and
in many a town, village and hamlet Jewish citizens are casting
in their lot with others of the area to support this united
fund-raising endeavor.
Fortunately, by now the Chest activities are an accepted
part of our civic lives and we need no great inducement or
persuasion to solicit our backing. The child welfare and care
agencies, the recreation facilities, the character building ac
tivities afforded on a non-denominational basis are recognized
as worthy of the highest concerted effort of American citizen
ry.
In Atlanta, in Savannah, in Birmingham—to mention a few
of the larger communities—the Jewish community center and
the Jewish federation are included in the budgeted Chest
F'und. If for no other reason, Jewish men and women should
give to the Chest, but there are dozens of other reasons and
The Southern Israelite is happy to recognize the generosity
among our people which goes out unequivocably for the pro
ject as a whole and not on any denominational basis. This
periodical is especially proud of the part many of our Jewish
leaders have taken in the overall top direction of the Chest
drives and in the rank and file of the solicitation.
A New Season Moves Into High Gear
When does learning and study stop?
For some people this tragic moment occurs upon completion
of the childhood period of school days, but this is not so for
Jewry and more and more the errant people of the book are
rediscovering the sheer joy and rewards of the pursuit of
knowledge. This stimulus could well sustain them through a
lifetime. Some will make this discovery independently; others
in concert with the advancing ken of their children. Many
will find the pleasure of knowledge'in study classes conducted
by their congregational rabbis.
Atlantans have an especially wonderful opportunity to pur
sue Jewish studies at the Atlanta Institute which is operated
under the aegis of the Bureau of Jewish Education. Marshall
ing the best of the community’s educators, rabbis, profession
al men, teachers at various of the universities in the area,
the Institute offers an inspiring variety of subject material
which merely awaits those who would take the initiative in
registering for the lively sessions. The high caliber of the
instruction yearly adds popularity to the Institute’s place in
the community.
♦ * * *
Opening of the Institute in Atlanta and of adult classes in
other sections of the South heralds again the growing rhythm
of Judaism which is showing such renewed vigor in the South.
First, the children return to school and this year religious
schools and afternoon classes almost universally indicate
larger attendance and interest. . . Then come the holidays
with the renewal of our spirituality and mass worship and
as our organizations reawaken for a new period of activity
and service, we add the crowning climax of study facilities
for adults.
Truly, another wonderful season lies ahead. . .

Canada Approves

OTTAWA, (JTA — The Can

ped during the next six months.
He added, however, that if “poli
tical circumstances” during that
period of time were to warrant
it, the outstanding part of the
jet order would be cancelled or
postponed.
The sale was approved by the
Cabinet, it was understood, on
the basis that the defensive na
ture of the requested shipment
has been "clearly established.”
Last month, Canadian Minister
of External Affairs Lester B.
Pearson informed the House of
Commons here that three or four
governments, including Canada,
had completed discussions on the
question of sharing in the respon
sibility for the shipments of arms
to Israel.
