Ahavath Achim Sisterhood Tells
Plans for Annual Silver Tea
Annual Silver Tea of the
Ahavath Achim Sisterhood will
be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Nov.
5, at the A.A. Educational Center,
according to Mrs. Si Rosenbloom,
president.
Rabbi Harry Epstein will make
the principal talk. An installa
tion ceremony will be held for
new members under direction of
Mrs. Bernard Gordon, chairman.
Mrs. Leonard Meyer is in charge
of the program.
Mrs. Herbert Karp and her new
singing partner, Clifton Hughes,
will sing, accompanied on the pi-

Ahavath Achim Host Sunday
To Seminar on Standards
A seminar on Synagogue Stand
ards, sponsored by the Southeast
Region of the United Synagogue
uf America, will be held at the
Congregation Ahavath Achim Ed
ucational Center, 250 Tenth
Street, on Sunday, Nov. 4.
Conference leader and guest
speaker will be Samuel Roth-
stein of New York, honorary life
president of the United Syna
gogue of America. Hyman B.
Meltz of Atlanta is general chair
man of the Seminar. Joseph
Cuba, president of the host con
gregation, and Dr. Harry H. Ep
stein is Rabbi.
The principal feature of the
morning session, starting at 10
a.m., will be four concurrent
round table discussions on: “The
Sabbath,” “Public Functions” and
“Kashrut, Fund Raising and Moral
Dignity,” and “Standards for
Membership and Leadership.”
The finding of each round table
discussion will be reported for
action to the entire conference at
the afternoon session, beginning
at 2:30 p.m.

The luncheon session, at 1 p.m.,
will feature Mr. Rothstein speak
ing on ‘‘Synagogue Standards,
and Who Shall, Set Them?” Mr.
Rothstein, an attorney, is active
in Jewish and general communal
affairs in New York and nation
ally. He is also a director of the
Jewish Theological Seminary of
America, and of the American
Association for Jewish Education.
Participants in the Seminar will
comprise the southeastern mem
bership of the United Synagogue
of America, which in Atlanta in
cludes all the members of the
Ahavath Achim Congregation.

AUGUSTA—Miss Shirley Deann
Sawilowsky, daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Emanuel Sawilowsky, became
the bride of Norman Irvine Sha
piro, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harry
Shapiro, October 21, at the Adas
Yeshuron Synagogue. Rabbi Chaim
Seiger and Rev. Mendel Klein
performed the ceremony.
The best man was Ike Shapiro.
Usher-groomsmen were Jerome
Shapiro, Sammy Shapiro, Herbert
Shapiro, Sanford Karesh, Mal
colm Estroff and Herbert Silver.
The bridesmaids were Hillarie
Clein, Jackie Rabhan, Brenda
Shapiro, Terry Levy, Sonia Rob
bins and Rosemary Ram. Junior
bridesmaids were Sharon Sha
piro and Marlene Tanenbaum.
Following the ceremony a re
ception was held in the synagogue
social hall. Simone Simowitz kept
the bride’s book.
The couple left for a wedding
trip to Miami and Havana. Upon
their return they will make their
home at Forest Hills Apartments
in Augusta.
SOUTHERN NOTES
Mr. and Mrs. Joseph B. Wolfe
of Atlanta, have returned to their
home on St. Augustine place af
ter an autumn cruise of the Med
iterranean on the SS Caronia,
which took them as far East as
Israel. On their arrival at Cher
bourg, France, they disembarked
and visited Paris, returning to
New York on -the Queen Eliza
beth. En route to Atlanta the
Wolfes visited their son and
daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Marcus
L. Haas, in Memphis.
Mrs. Simon Selig, Mrs. Morris
Bernard, Mrs. Eddie David, Mrs.
Ruby Oppenheim and Mrs. Ethel
Copelan are in Miami Beach where
they will spend the coming month
at the beach home of Mrs. Selig.
Mrs. Lewis Hirsch of Atlanta
is visiting in Houston with her
daughter.
Mrs. Max Kahn of Atlanta, has
as her guest her mother, Mrs.
Freedman of Louisiana.
Mrs. Elkan Ries, Jr., and daugh
ters, Janet and Cathy, of Balti
more, are visiting with Mrs. Ries’
parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jake W.
Hirsch, in Atlanta for a few
weeks.
Mrs. Leonard Jacobus of Miami
visited during the past week with
her sister, Mrs. Lee Strasburger,
in Atlanta.
Mr. and Mrs. Leopold Hein of
Atlanta, are in Florida on a com
bined business and pleasure trip.
Mr. and Mrs. Sam J. Epstein
of Atlanta will leave this week
end for an extended vacation in
Miami, New Orleans and Birm
ingham. Mr. Epstein is the form

PTA to Meet Nov. 6
The Hebrew Academy Parent-
Teacher Association will hear
Rabbi Sydney K. Mossman at its
next meeting to be held at the
Atlanta Jewish Community Cent
er, at 8:30 p.m., Tuesday, Nov.
6.
Rabbi Mossman, who recently -
assumed religious leadership of
the Shearith Israel Congregation,
will speak on the subject, “Build
ing Closer Family Relations.”
Mizrachi Women Aye
UJA y Bond Primacy
ATLANTIC CITY, (JTA) — A
resolution reaffirming the pri
macy of the United Jewish Ap
peal and support of the Israel
bond drive was adopted here at
the conclusion of the four-day
31st national convention of the
Mizrachi Women’s Organization
of America.
Mrs. Lionel Golub of New
York was unanimously elected
president of the organization.
Mrs. Golub’s election followed
the adoption of a resolution ex
pressing the delegates’ “complete
abhorrance of the American
Council for Judaism for its dis
semination of extreme falsehoods
and distortions put out by paid
Arab propagandists.”

Mrs. Dora Smolen has return
ed from Birmingham where she
visited her brother Walter I.
Morris. Mr. and Mrs. George Kass
of Piedmont, Ala., and relatives

nah, is visiting her son and
daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs.
Elliot Serotta and family.
Dr. and Mrs. Manuel Weisman
were in Savannah where they
attended the meetings of the
Georgia Dental Association.
The Daughters of Israel held
their annual Halloween Carni
val last Sunday at the Abram
Pomerance Social Hall.
Hadassah recently held a cake
sale with all proceeds going to
wards Hadassah’s many philan-
tropic projects in Israel.
The Round Table Supper Club
of the Temple Sisterhood met re
cently in the social hall of the
Walton Way Temple, at which
time they discussed pros and eons
of the national political issue.
The YMHA inaugurated its
1956-57 cultural series with a
folk-song recital by Murray Phil
lips, tenor and guitarist.
The Evergreen Garden Club
held its meeting at the home of
Mrs. Sam Stadlen with Mrs. Harry
Steine as co-hostess. Members
were asked to enter horticultural
specimens at the Exchange Club
Fair. Plans were also made to
participate in the Plant Exchange
on Nov. 15, with Mrs. Nathan
Jolles as chairman.
JWVy Masons Unite
With Legionnaires in
Blood Bank Day
Three veterans groups and one
Masonic lodge will join in spon
sorship of Sunday’s Community
wide Blood Bank Day in Atlanta.
Co-sponsoring the event to be
held at 1071 Piedmont Ave., N.E.,
will be Post 112, Jewish War
Veterans; Fulton Lodge, No. 216;
American Legion, Post No. 1,
and Fulton County Voiture, No.
217, 40 & 8.

teers who donate a pint of blood.
The two Jewish groups which
pioneered in establishing a blood
bank program which has won na
tional recognition are cooperat
ing with the Legionnaires so that
these can undertake a program
of their own.

To Meet November 7
The Mizrachi Women, Atlanta
Chapter, will hold its next meet
ing Wednesday, Nov. 7, at 8:00
p.m., at the Shearith Israel Edu
cational Building.
Convention report will be given
by delegates. Rev. Philip Rosen
blatt will be featured on the mu
sical program. Refreshments will
be served and a door prize will
be given. Members are cordially
invited to attend and bring a
friend.

Sisterhood Will
Hear H. Popkin
The Beth Jacob Sisterhood will
hold its monthly meeting on
Monday, Nov. 5, at 1:30 p.m. at
the Synagogue Reception Hall.
• Featured on the program will
be Herman Popkin, formerly di
rector of the Southern Zionist
Youth Commission, who will dis
cuss the topic ‘‘Your Children
and the Children of Israel.” Mr.
Popkin visited Israel on a schol
arship grant from Southern
Young Judaea region, according
to Mrs. Ben Golden, program
vice president.
Refreshments will be served.
Sisterhood President Mrs. Julius
Perlinski states that a door prize
will be awarded to a paid-up
member. The public is ‘invited.
