nounced they would sponsor five
units, tnaking the total cf this
gift $25,000. No stipulation was
placed upon the use of this sum
and the officials are free to use
it as they see fit, perhaps for
scholarships, salaries or new re-
seach or new buildings.
Louis Aronstam, another Bran-
deis fellow, who has sponsored
a chair at the school since its
inception, announced he will
sponsor five units annually for
five years in honor of his late
wife, Rita Aronstam.
Several other Atlantans an
nounced they would sponsor
units. Sidney Wein brother of the
speaker, announced the gift of
$5,000 over a five-year period.
Harold Marcus, A. J. Weinberg
and Harold Montag also pledged
unit sponsorship.
A considerable part of the
$140,000 represents gifts on an
annual basis from $1250 to $100
and since many of these gifts will
likely be repeated through direct
mail and personal contact with
out benefits of public dinners,
the total for Brandeis during the
next five years will likely be
in the vicinity of $175,000.
Dr. Benjamin Fine, Pulitzer-
prize-winning education editor of
the New York Times, was an
other speaker at the Brandeis
dinner.
Dr. Fine pointed out the crisis
which the public faces in the
need for higher education for the
future. By 1970, college enroll
ment will double, with students
finding it more and more dif
ficult to be registered and the
colleges being less and less pre
pared to accomodate them.
He listed the lack of faculty
members, the need for raising
college standards, the shortage of
buildings, the lack of scholar
ships for worthy students and
the financial crisis facing the
colleges as signposts of danger
in what lies ahead.
Unless we take steps to meet
the enrollment buldge which is
taking place each year,” Dr. Fine
declared, ‘‘our economy will suf
fer.”
Mr. Aronstam presided at the
dinner. Abe Goldstein had charge
of the solicitation pledges. Rabbi
Jacob Rothschild delivered the
invocation.

Traffic Judge Hard
On Haifa Violators
HAIFA, (JTA) A Haifa magis
trate put the processing of traf
fic offenders in this city on a
mass production basis last week
when some 200 violators were
brought before him in one day.
Stiffest sentence handed down
by the magistrate, S. Razi, was
a 200 Israel pound fine and sus
pension of a license for a year
against a motorcyclist with two
previous convictions. About ten
speeders drew fines ranging from
50 to 70 pounds.
Bare Operation Gives
Life to Phila. Baby
NEW YORK,. (JTA) — A nine-
month-old infant born without a
gall bladder or bile ducts is now
living virtually a normal baby’s
life following an operation at
Philadelphia’s Albert Einstein
Medical Center which created art
ificial ducts, it was revealed here
by Dr. Julian A. Sterling, asso
ciate in surgery at the Center’s
Northern Division. The child
Christine Koening, daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Fred Koening of
Philadelphia, originally was con
ceded a life expectancy of no more
than 8 months.
When she was admitted to the
Einstein Center last April, surg
eons there decided to attempt
what is now believed to have
bCen the first recorded case of
successful surgery of this nature
on an infant. After the opera
tion, which involved the insert
ion of five perforated silver
tubes, known as Touthey tubes,
Christine showed a marked im
provement. Dr. Sterling said
when she is a little older, an
other operation — to connect the
artificial ducts to her intestinal
tract — will be attempted.
