lowing project: that all the Jewish
charity and welfare organizations
join together.” Since then, this
rroup has had three planning meet
ings.
But when I came to Santiago,
my objective seemed, for a time,
hopeless. I discussed it with a Jew-
15 community leader. He said,
"Your idea is wonderful, but you
are 20 years ahead of your time.”
I had insisted, as I did every
where I travelled, that representa
tives of all the separate Jewish
women's groups of Santiago be in
vited to the meeting I was to ad
dress.
When we met, the 12 women as
sembled agreed: ' We need a unit
ed organization badly. It may take
us three or four years to achieve,
but this is the time to begin work
ing for it.”
My visits everywhere brought to
gether the Jewish women of dif
ferent nationality groups — often
for the very first time. And it
turned out, not only in Chile but
in the other countries I visited—
Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay, Vene
zuela, Peru, Guatemala, Mexico—
that I was not ahead of my time.
I was, in fact exactly in time, for
there is a great awakening taking
place in South America today, and
this includes the Jewish com
munity. A rapid industrialization
is revamping many aspects of life
in the rich continent. In the brand-
new looking cities^ tall shining
building? stand side by side with
huge block- of slums. The very
modern mixes with the medieval.
Jewish philanthropic institutions
today still emphasize stark relief
needs: a roof overhead and three
meals a day for the needy. But
there are those in each community
who are beginning to think of
broader needs — and of training
volunteers for social welfare deve
lopment.
In Sao Paulo, Brazil, for ins
tance, I visited a delightful recn
tion project for older peop
"Grandmothers’ Club,” it was ca
ed (although it included ma:
grandfathers.) It was inspired at
developed by a local Jewish w
man who had once seen the Cou.
cil Club for Older People spoi
sored by the New York Section
the National Council of Jewis
Women. She had a committee of 2
women to assist her.
In Buenos Aires, training cour
ses for volunteers in social agen
cies are now being instituted.
Among the 116 professional edu
cators, health and welfare special
ists from Jewish communitie
abroad who have taken advanced
studies in the United States under
scholarships from the National
Council of Jewish Women, there
are four young South American
women who prove how valuable
American - trained personnel can
be in the development of human
welfare service. Psychiatrically-
trained Berta Javkin, of Bueno?
Aires, recently was instrumental in
bringing about the reorganization of
the Council of Jewish Women of
Argentina, with Rosita Resnick as
its secretary. Ursula Damon Mey
er has played an important part in
developing a 50 - woman organiz
ing committee in Sao Paulo. Clara
Safirowitz, also in Sao Paulo, is
taking part in the best social work
program for children that I saw
anywhere in South America.
South America is developing into
a civilization with enormous pos
sibilities. Constructive relations
with North America will greatly
accelerate its growth as an import
ant asset to the democraic world.
I returned home with a strong
feeling of kinship for our co-relig
ionists there as Jews and as fellow-
human beings. I hope we American
Jews will offer them increasing
assistance, friendship and under
standing.
A FATHER'S ADMONITION
Fear the Lord the God of thy Fathers and serve Him in love,
for fear alone restrains a man from sin, while love stimulates
him to good.
Accustom thyself to habitual goodness, for a man's character
is what habit makes it.
The perfection of the body is a necessary antecedent to the
perfection of the soul, for health is the key to the inner chamber.
Measure thy words, for by multiplying ivords thou increaseth
error.
If thou find in the Law or the Prophets or the Sages a hard
saying which thou const not understand, stand fast by thy faith
and attribute the fault to thine own want of intelligence. Place
it in a corner of your heart for future consideration, but despise
not thy religion because thou art unable to understand one dif
ficult matter
Love truth and uprightness—the ornaments of the soul—and
cleave unto them; prosperity so obtained is built upon a sure
rock.
Keep firmly to thy word; let not a legal contract or witnesses
be more binding than thine verbal reservations and subterfuges,
evasions and sharp practices. Woe to him who builds his house
upon them.
Abhor inactivity and indolence, the causes of destruction of
body, of penury, of self-contempt—the ladders of Satan and his
satellites.
Defile not your souls by quarrelsomeness and petulance. I
have seen the white become black, the low brought still lower,
on account of quarrelsomeness.
