THE SOUTHERN ISRAELITE
Pace Eleven
Hadassah Background, Impact
We know one group of women
who are proud of admitting they
are going to be 45 years old soon!
For it was in 1912 that this group
of American Jewish women, mo
tivated by a desire to help build
a better life for the people of
the United States and for the
people of Israel, began blazing a
noteworthy trail in areas design
ed to benefit all mankind. And
that is something anyone can be
proud of.
The name of this humanitarian
organization is Hadassah. Its
members include every kind and
type - from a housewife in To
ledo to a business woman in Chi
cago, a farmer’s wife in Iowa, a
school teacher in Atlanta, a nurse
in Denver, a widow lady in Syra
cuse, a stenographer in Washing
ton, a doctor in New York - a
real cross-section of an impor
tant segment of the American
people. Rich and poor, young and
old, these American Jewish
women — 300,000 of them — have
banded together to raise the
standards of living, health, and
welfare in Israel and to lay the
foundation for a creative and dy
namic Jewish life in the United
States.
Founded in 1912 by the late

vision, Hadassah has raised (with
out the aid of a professional fund
raising staff) and expended more
than $110,000,000 in Israel since
its inception. This has supported
a network of hospitals, communi
ty health centers, mother-and-
child health stations, vocational
education schools and workshops
for agricultural and industrial
training, as well as a unique
string of 240 settlements where
young immigrants from all parts
of the world are equipped for
healthy, productive lives in their
own homeland. Hadassah is pri
marily responsible for the fact
that Israel today has the highest
health standards of any country
in the Middle East and is indeed
on a level with most Western
countries.
Hadassah’s achievements in
bringing health and vitality to the
people of Israel are too plentiful
to enumerate. Such dreaded di
seases as malaria, trachoma, tu
berculosis, and other scourges
which continue to exact a heavy
toll in human life in the Middle
East have been conquered and
placed under control in Israel.
Wherever possible, Hadassah
brought foremost medical authori
ties, including Dr. Paul Dudley
White, the renowned heart spec
ialist, and Dr. Elmer Hess, Presi
dent of the American Medical
Association, to visit Israel and
to lecture to the medical fraterni
ty in that country. At the same

time, Hadassah arranged a series
of fellowships enabling young Is
raeli physicians, surgeons, nurses,
and scientist to come to this coun
try to pursue their studies at
first-rank American hospitals and
universities. Not content to rest
on its laurels, Hadassah is con-
tantly forging ahead, bringing
Western concepts of democracy
and equality to the people of
that sister republic. At the pres
ent time this great organization
is constructing near Jerusalem a
$12,500,000 Medical Center, which
medical authorities agree will be
the finest of its type anywhere
in the world. These Herculean
tasks Hadassah could not have
undertaken without the devotion
and zeal of its 300,000 members.
On the American scene, Ha
dassah has made an equally con
structive impact. Hadassah mem
bers as individuals are generally
also in the forefront of every city
and patriotic endeavor, whether
it be the Red Cross or the local
Community Chest or the U. S. O.
or any of the other community
undertakings established to ad
vance the common good. In the
last presidential elections, Hadas-
pah was cited by the American
Heritage Foundation for its work,
on a non-political basis, in help
ing to bring out the vote. Hadas
sah members will play a similar
role in the 1960 national election.
Through comprehensive education
programs, including adult educa
tion courses, Hadassah strives to
build an American Judaism that
blends the glories of the past with
the hopes and dreams of the fu
ture.
