THE SOUTHERN ISRAELITE
Hadassah Medical Clinic to Serve
People of All Faiths, Color
The establishment this year of
a Hadassah Community Health
Station equipped to provide pre
ventive, diagnostic and curative
physical and mental health ser
vices in the all-Arab village of
Abu Ghosh outside of Jerusalem,
is “symbolic of Israel’s determi
nation to bring to all its citizens
the fruits of equality and democ
racy.”
The Abu Ghosh health station
will be the first maintained by
Hadassah in an all-Arab com
munity.
Though Israel’s 190,000 Arab
citizens derive equal benefits, a-
long with the country’s 1,600,000
Jewish citizens, from Hadassah’s

station represents another link in
the medical network being estab
lished by Hadassah to cover all
of Israel’s citizens in the rural
areas.
The Arab village of Abu Ghosh,
which presently has a population
of 1,050, is named after a Moslem
family which settled there in the
16th century. Abu Ghosh occu
pies the site of the well-known
"Kiryat Yearim” (Village of the
Forests) of the Bible.
Until Hadassah opened its health
station, there had been no medi

medical care.
The new Hadassah program for
Abu Ghosh includes the dissemi
nation of latest information about
health and sanitation, the break
ing down of cultural or environ
ments taboos interfering with
sound physical or emotional
health, vaccination and immuni
zation, treatment of existing phy
sical ailments including dental and
eye care, and the treatment of
emotional tensions within the
family group.
Hadassah has pioneered for a
number of years with similar-type
community health programs, the
first one established four years
ago with remarkable results in
Kiryat Yovel, formerly known as
Bet Mazmil, a community of 5,000
souls outside of Jerusalem.
Hadassah Pioneers
With Puplication
of Book on Thought
“Great Ages and Ideas of the
Jewish People,” sponsored by Ha-
dassah, the Women’s Zionist Or
ganization of America, and pub
lished by Random House, has
gone into a second printing wjth-
in six weeks after its appearance
on the market. The entire 15,000-
copy first edition was sold since
the book’s publication October 24.
This history-making announce
ment in the publishing field was
made this week by Mrs. Max
Schenk, chairman of Hadassah’s
Education Committee, and Mrs.
Benjamin Gottesman, former
chairman of the organization’s
Book Committee, which inaugur
ated the project.
Written primarily for the gen
eral public by six prominent his
torians, “Great Ages and Ideas
of the Jewish People” will con
tinue to be available at book
stores throughout the country.
Mrs. Gottesman pointed out
that historical books in the cate
gory of “Great Ages and Ideas
of the Jewish People” rarely sell
more than 5,000 copies a year, and
that Random House regards as
“unprecedented and phenomenal”
the public’s acceptance of the
Hadassah volume. She said that
pre-publication estimates by ex
perts in the publishing field had
anticipated that a 15,000-copy
first printing of “Great Ages and
Ideas of the Jewish People”
would meet all market needs for
at least two years.
Since its appearance, the Ha
dassah book was made the De
cember choice of the Jewish Book
Guild. Also, Long Island Uni
versity’s School of Education
gave Hadassah a special award
in recognition of the organiza
tion’s 1956 adult education pro
gram, which culminated in the
publication of “Great Ages and
Ideas of the Jewish People." The
New York Times hailed “Great
Ages and Ideas of the Jewish
People” as one of the outstand
ing 250 books of the 10,000 titles
published in 1956. The volume is
slated for use in *a number of
universities, theological schools,
and adult education groups
throughout the country.
Edited by Leo W. Schwarz,
“Great Ages and Ideas of the
Jewish People” was written by
Salo W. Baron, Gershon D. Cohen,
Abramah S. Halkin, Yehezkel
Kaufman, Ralph Marcus and
Cecil Roth.
