Few Glimpses Into Rabbi
Geffen’s 46 Years in Atlanta
A Look At The Record
We asked the writer to record a few of the highlights about his
father which came to mind about his father and the accompanying
material is the result. A few brief glimpses into the life of a man
who lives a saintly exemplary life and whose example has filled
many with inspiration and courage and devotion ... He lived
most of his 43 years in Atlanta on the South side, close to the
Synagogue he had served so long. Slowly, the families began to
move to the fashionable northsidc and not too many months ago
there was hardly enough men around to furnish the minyan and
the rabbi and his wife had to move too, close to the new Shearith
Israel Kducational Building which has become the center for his
congregational activities. —THE EDITOR
By Louis Geffen
When Rabbi Tobias Geffen
came to Atlanta at the kindling
of the second light of Chanukah
in the month of Kislev, the year
5671 (December 27, 1910), he be
gan a lifelong career as rabbi of
Congregation S h e a ri t h Israel.
With him when he arrived was
his wife, Hene, and five children,
Lottie, Joel, Louis, Samuel and
Bessie. Three other children, An
nette, Helen and Abraham were
born in Atlanta.
It Is significant that Rabbi
Geffen’s arrival occurred on the
Jewish holiday which means “de
dication” and is symbolized by
“light” the traditions of Judaism
and to bring light to his fellow
man through learning, wisdom
and good deeds.
Since the Rabbi considered
learning and knowledge as essen
tial to making one a sincerely
religious person, one of his first
acts was to start a class for his
congregants and others in the
study of the Talmud. It is remark
able that during the past forty-
six years this class has never
ceased functioning. When the
study of the Shas (62 treatises of
the Talmud) was completed af
ter many years of study, the Rab
bi would start from the begin
ning again.
It is interesting to note that
the study of the entire Shas has
been completed three times, and
in January of 1955 the study of
this Talmudic culture was start
ed for the fourth time. There
were many obstacles w’hich the
Rabbi had to overcome to keep
this class going during all these
years. But he was never discour
aged and he never gave up. It
is understandable that a large
number of individuals were stim
ulated by the brilliant interpre
tation nnd exposition of these an
cient Talmudic texts by this mod
est scholar of the Talmud.
Although many of the Rabbi’s
disciples are deceased and others
have moved away from the city
of Atlanta, yet it is truly very
heartening to know that four of
the present members of this Tal
mud class started with him forty-
six years ago. They are Hyman
Wilenskv, M. Taylor, I. Cohen
and Moses Blass, all members of
Elsenberg, and Sidney Parks, each of
whose post office address Is 1502 At
lanta Federal Savings Building, Atlanta
3. Georgia.
7.
The corporation shall have all the
rights, powers, privileges and Immuni
ties that are conferred on private cor
porations by the laws of this state, as
fully as If such powers were set forth
herein, nnd such additional powers,
rights and privileges as may be prop
er, necessarv or Incident to the con
duct of said business.
WHEREFORE, petitioners pray that
they be Incorporated under the name
and style aforesaid and with all the
rights, powers and privileges which are
hereinabove set forth.

Congregation Shearith Israel.
Rabbi Geffen did not restrict
his teaching only to adults. He
was quite concerned with the He
brew and religious education of
the young. He organized and su
pervised the first Hebrew School
in the city of Atlanta. Also, he
devoted much of his time to per
sonal instruction of many young
men and women, including his
own daughters and sons. From his
students and disciples there came
forth fifteen rabbis and many
lay leaders who are quite active
in Atlanta and many other com
munities throughout the United
States.
It is interesting to note that
Rabbi Geffen started the first or
ganized effort in Atlanta to col
lect funds for the aid of the
needy families in the European
countries at the end of World
War I. At the request of the
Agudas Harabonim (Union of Or
thodox Rabbis) who had set up
the Central Relief Committee, and
with the help of a small local
committee, he set up a system of
weekly collections from Jewish
members of the community.
Those who agreed to donate,
promised to make weekly pay
ments ranging from five cents
to fifty cents per week. Cards
were set up for each contributor,
and every Sunday morning teams
of young boys and girls would
go out on designated routes to
make these collections. Each team
had its route and was responsible
for the weekly collections. Of
course, the rabbi immediately re
cruited the older children of his
family to serve on these teams
along with a few other young
boys and girls.
As the money was collected, it
was turned over to the rabbi and
recorded by a member of the
committee who was a bookkeeper.
Accurate records were kept, and
every dollar collected was sent
to the office of the Central Re
lief Committee in New York,
from whence the money was dis
tributed to those in need. There
was no expense incurred, since
everyone in Atlanta who parti
cipated in this project, gave his
services gratuitously.
However, most of the work fell
on the shoulders of the rabbi,
since he coordinated and super
vised all of its activities. Never
theless he continued this work
for a number of years, until the
United Welfare Fund was organ
ized in Atlanta. He gave whole

hearted support to the late
Harold Hirsh, who was instru
mental in unifying the fund rais
ing activities of the various Jew
ish organizations into a single
Welfare Fund Drive. As a result
of the Rabbi’s efforts, thousands
of dollars were sent to sustain
and rescue hundreds of needy
European families.
Rabbi Geffen was also the per
son to whom rabbis, scholars and
meshulachs, from any part of the
world would turn when visiting
the Atlanta Jewish Community.
They rarely failed to call the
rabbi immediately upon their ar
rival, even if it happened to be
in the wee hours of the morning.
Frequently, the Rebetzin, Mrs.
Geffen, had to use the limited
supply of food, which she had
prepared for her children, for one
or more of these Orchim (vis
itors). They had to be taken care
of first, even though it meant
that the children would have to
partake of bread and jelly as a
substitute. Likewise the children
very often would gjve up their
beds to such guests, and they
would sleep on make-shift beds
made of chairs or mattresses plac
ed on the floor.
The mitzvah of Hachnosas Or
chim (taking care of the Strang
er) was an essential part of their
religious life, and thus the Reb
etzin and the Rabbii set forth an
example of unselfish living and
concern for the welfare of others.
The Rabbi also mapped out for
these travelers what cities they
should visit and how to get there
with a minimum of expense. As
the Rabbi’s children observed
these activities, they soon discov
ered why their father knew so
much about the geography of the
United States. Thus the Rabbi
was directly and indirectly re
sponsible for the support and
maintenance of innumerable Ye-
shivahs, Homes for Orphans,
Homes for the Aged, Hospitals
and other Charitable Institutions
located in Palestine, Europe and
the United States.
