Testimonial Dinner for Rabbi
Geffen To Be Held Sunday
This Sunday evening at 6:30
p.m. the auditorium of the Jew
ish Community Center on Peach
tree Street will be the setting
for the testimonial dinner to be
given to Rabbi Tobias Geffen in
recognition of his 46 years in the
community of Atlanta. Reserva
tions have been pouring in for
this affair and it is expected that
the auditorium will be filled to
overflowing.
Dr. Irving Greenberg, the
chairman of this dinner, will act
as toastmaster for the evening
and will introduce many local
dignitaries who will extend greet
ings to Rabbi Geffen. Also pre
sent will be Rabbi and Mrs. Gef-
fen’s eight children. From New
York state there have come Rab
bi and Mrs. Joel Geffen and
their daughter Rela, Rabbi and
Mrs. Samuel Geffen and son
Peter Alan, and Dr. Abraham
Geffen. Mrs. Lottie Simon and her
two children, Harold and Phyllis,
are here from Spartanburg, S. C.
Mrs. Karl Wilensky and son
David have arrived from New
Orleans, Mrs. Ralph Raskas and
sons Heschel and Stanley are at
tending from St. Louis, Mo., and
Mrs. Ziff and son Joel have come
from Minneapolis. Louis Geffen,
the only son who resides in At
lanta, will attend with his wife
and son.
Rabbi Samuel Geffen, rabbi of
the Jewish Center of Forest Hills
West, will represent the family
and bring greetings from them.

Testimonial Speaker
Rabbi Joel S. Geffen, who will
be the principal speaker at his
father’s testimonial dinner in At
lanta Sunday, holds top executive
posts with the Jewish Theolo
gical Seminary of America, the
United Synagogue of America and
the National Federation of Men’s
Clubs.
He was recently cited by Dis
trict No. 1 of B’nai B’rith for his
outstanding services to the Ameri
can Jewish Community. Previous
ly, he had served for fifteen years
as spiritual leader of Temple
Beth El, Troy, N. Y.
A native of Atlanta, he was
ordained by the Jewish Theolog
ical Seminary in 1926 and holds
degrees from New York State
College for Teachers. A former
president of the New York State
Zionist Region, he is a member
of the ZOA and the American
Jewish Congress, as well as B’nai
B’rith and other professional as
sociations. He serves as editor of
the “Torch,” official publication
of the National Federation of
Jewish Men’s Clubs.

Rabbi’s only Atlanta grandson,
will give a special tribute to his
grandfather. Sidney Gulden, pres
ident of the Shearith Israel Syna
gogue, will present a testimonial
scroll to Rabbi Tobias Geffen.
Rabbi H. Geffen, brother of the
Rabbi, will present personal
greetings.
All of Atlanta’s rabbis will take
part in the program. Rabbi Harry
H. Epstein of the Congregation
Ahavath Achim, will give the in
vocation. Rabbi Emanuel Feld
man of the Beth Jacob Congre
gation, will lead in the saying
of the grace. Rabbi Joseph Cohen,
of the Congregation Or Ve Sha
lom, will bestow the priestly
blessing, and Rabbi Jacob Roths
child, of the Jewish Temple, will
give the benediction. Rabbi Syd
ney K. Mossman, of Shearith Is
rael Congregation, will present
a tribute on behalf of his congre
gation in the form of the pro
posed Rabbi Tobias Geffen Li
brary.
Cantor Joseph Schwartzman, of
the Ahavath Achim Congregation,
will render several traditional
Hebrew selections. Included also
will be greetings from Mayor
Hartsfield; Dr. Goodrich C. White,
president of Emory University;
Ralph McGill, Editor of the At
lanta Constitution; and Abe
Goldstein, President of the At
lanta Jewish Community Coun
cil. A number of surprise pre
sentations will also be made.
