THE SOUTHERN ISRAELITE
Pare Nine
Welcome to Savannah
Regional President Stresses
Time for Action
Dear Fellow Americans:
As I write to you, the world
of 1957 dawns. Our Jewish world
is faced with flight, terror, de
portees, escapees, in numbers
such as we have not seen since
World War II. Hungary, Egypt,
North Africa, East Europe — all
are frantically pouring out our
people, who are running towards
freedom. Israel will welcome most
of them, because her people are
willing and because other doors,
except to a very limited extent,
are closed.
We, as Americans — we, as
Jews — through Hadassah’s far
reaching, far sighted and ever
ready program can be a major
instrument in speeding to their
destination those who seek free
dom.
Early in March we will meet
in conference to search and eval
uate our past efforts; to delib
erate and formulate our future
program; but mainly to act now,
reaffirming to our fellow beings
that we will continue to support
them. And if by early March the
incredible miracle has been ach
ieved, every fellow Jew having
obtained his freedom, then our
program must still be further
strengthened, to assure a perman
ence to this victory and to as
certain that history shall not re
peat itself; man can go forward,
striving to maintain a peaceful
and healthier world.
Many outstanding and capable
personalities will be with us for
our three day Conference in Sa-
MRS. JACK LEVY
vannah: Mrs. George Rossyn,
elected National Board member,
as Conference Advisor; Dr. Mi
riam Freund, National President,
as banquet speaker. “The Great
Ages and Ideas of the Jewish
People,” Hadassah’s new book
will be" presented by a well qual
ified panel. Our Sunday night
open Forum offers an exciting
list of personalities.
We need every interested Jew
ish woman to join us in Savan
nah for to-day, not to-morrow,
for now is the Time for Action.
With sincere Hadassah greet
ings,

We in Savannah are proud and privileged to welcome
the many delegates and guests to our Twentieth Annual Con
ference at the beautiful DeSoto Hotel on March 3rd, 4th, and
5th.
We want those of you who were with us at the 1950 Con
ference in Savannah to know that this one will be even more
memorable . . . and for those of you who will be at a Savan
nah Conference for the first time, we promise you three days
packed full of fun, facts, and friendships.
With the experience and capability of our conference
chairmen Mrs. Raymond Rosen, Mrs. Abe Rabhan and Mrs.
Joseph Wilensky; with the hospitality of our entire city, and
the enthusiasm of our membership, we need only your pres
ence to make this conference complete.
If you really want to see “HADASSAH IN ACTION”
come to Savannah in March. We’re looking forward to greet
ing you.

Things are really humming . . . like true “BALABOST-
IES” we are getting our house ready for you, our guests, to
the Twentieth Annual Southeastern Regional Conference of
Hadassah in Savannah.
Our transportation committee is ready to meet you . . .
our hospitality committee is ready to greet you . . .' our lunch
eons and banquet chairmen are ready to seat you . . . and our
fun-night committee promises to treat you.
Since summer we have planned and scanned, we have
fussed and discussed, we have worried and hurried . . . and
we have loved every minute of it: for we know that the re
sults of our labor will be, not only your enjoyment, but the
strengthening of Hadassah.
The one thing that we have been unable to do is to find
the magic word that would transmit the enthusiasm and ardor
of our entire membership to all of you in the region; for then
we would be assured that each of you would leave no stone
unturned to be our guests in Savannah on March 3rd, 4th,
and 5th.
So you, too, be good “BALABOSTIES” and start getting
your houses in order. Hire your sitter . . . arrange for your
litter . . . don’t let your hubby be bitter . . . you’ll be back
even fitter.

National Board Member
To Advise Conference
National President to
Address Convention
Mrs. George D. Rossyn, of Mal
den, Mass., will be the advisor
to the Twentieth Annual Confer
ence of the Southeast Region of
Hadassah. She is well qualified
to assume this advisory post as
she is National Chairman of Lead
ership Training and a member of
the National Board of Hadassah.
In addition, Mrs. Rossyn will
be the guest speaker at the Ha
dassah Medical Organization lun
cheon on Monday, March 4th. She
will discuss ‘HADASSAH IN AC
TION” in relation to our medical
installations and projects .She has
spoken before scores of Hadassah
audiences — her warmth, sin
cerity, and intelligence have made
her a much sought after speaker.
A devoted Hadassah worker
and leader for decades, Mrs.
Rossyn has held at one time or
another most of the important
Hadassah posts in her chapter and
region — including chapter pres
ident, regional vice president,
and regional political chairman.
She was a member at large of
the National Board from 1944-
1947; President of the New Eng
land Region from 1947-1950; co
opted to the National Board in
1950 and was unanimously elect
ed to the National Board in 1956.
Mrs. Rossyn, a Phi Beta Kap
pa graduate of Tufts College, took
special advanced courses in so
cial ethics at Harvard.
A dedicated Zionist, Mrs. Ros
syn has found time, in addition
to her Hadassah duties, to serve

Birthday Celebration
She admits to 45!! This year
marks the forty-fifth birthday of
Hadassah nationally and she can
be justly proud of her achieve
ments and accomplishments. The
Southeastern Region is planning
to present Hadassah with a tre
mendous birthday gift — 45 Life
Members!
The highlight of the 20th An
nual Conference of the Southeast
ern region of Hadassah will be
the banquet address by Dr. Mi
riam Freund, New York, Nation
al President of Hadassah.
An author, educator and schol
ar, Dr. Freund has been in the
forefront of the Zionist move
ment for many years. Her ex
cellent Jewish and secular back
ground, coupled with her intense
Zionist fervor and her unsur
passed intimate knowledge of Ha
dassah, have made her an un
usually well informed and much
sought after speaker before Ha
dassah and other Jewish groups
throughout the country. The Re
gion is most honored by Dr.
Freund’s acceptance in view of
the pressing times and the great
responsibility she carries as Ha-
dasah’s “chief executive.”
Dr. Freund is a former Na
tional Vice-President and Youth
Fashion and Design, and the oth
er in Hotel Management. As a re
sult of her efforts Hadassah op
erated with Youth Aliyah in
establishing a trailblazing rural
vocational education program.
In May, 1954, Dr. Freund was
sent to Israel to help inaugurate
the newest development in the
many-faceted program of Youth
Aliyah. She participated in the
ground-breaking ceremonies for
the building of the new semi
nary for Youth Aliyah instruc
tors. Following this visit, Dr.
Freund went on to French Mor-
rocco in order to gain first-hand
experience and knowledge of the
North African situation. She found
a deepfelt and urgent desire in
North Africa to send the youth
to Israel as Youth Aliyah wards.
In addition to her many Ha
dassah activities Dr. Freund has
served as Co-Chairman of the
American Zionist Youth Com-
DR. MIRIAM FREUND
mission, as a founder of IZFA,
and as a director of the Bran-
deis Youth Foundation. She is
also a member of the Board of
Directors of the Keren Hayesod
Fund and also one of the found
ing members of the Women’s Di
vision of Brandeis University.

moving spirits behind the steady
growth of Hadassah’s program
in Israel, with particular refer

tacular expansion of Hadassah’s
