RABBI’S VIEWPOINT
Parents & Children
By DR. TSRAEI, GERBER
Rabbi, Congregation Emanu-El, Dothan, Ala.
A number of Sundays ago, during a discussion that took place
that morning with our forthcoming confirmands, they made some
revealing statements. We had a rather frank discussion. Although I
am not convinced that they expressed the true reasons for their
actions, they nevertheless felt that they stood on firm ground when
they offered these excuses. For instance, when asked why they chew
ed gum in class and at services, they replied, “The big people do it.”
And I must admit they are right. I’ve seen some adults chewing during
services, which is rather unbecoming while sitting and praying in the
presence of the Lord. “Why do they talk during Junior Congregation
services?” The reply: “Our parents talk and laugh during services.”
Again they were right. There was no arguing this point either. “Why do
they object to coming to Junior Congregation services?” The answer:
“Our parents don’t come.” Who could argue the truth of these state
ments?
I do not believe that these excuses really explain their actions.
But who can deny that they have the examples to use as excuses.
This is the point I have been making for years now. Whether parents
(and adults generally) are willing to admit it or not, they set the
example that their children will use to explain their unwholesome
actions and shortcomings. Of course two wrongs do not make one
right. There is no justification for children to behave at times the way
they do. “But if our parents act this way,” they said in so many words,”
and they are older and supposedly more sensible, why can’t we?” Yes,
this is what our confirmands said one morning, not fully understand
ing the implications of their remarks.
Parents are guilty of even greater excesses against their children.
They want their offspring to grow up into mature, responsible, up
standing young men and women. At least this is what they say. But
when it comes to a showdowm, when the opportunity is available for
them to give their children a lesson in growing up, they intervene and
deny them this opportunity. They laugh and shrug it off unconcernedly
when their children are to be disciplined, and attempt to force them
into situations where they are not wanted. Because they are provoked
at a particular individual they mistakenly feel they are getting back
at them by engaging in infantile behavior, ignoring the fact that they
are really hurting themselves and their children. Instead of helping
their children mature, life is not all sugar and honey but has its
share of disappointments, they snatch these opportunities for growth
away from them. It brings to mind the cartoon I had under the glass
on my desk in the study. A country person, while being hit with a
snowball, says. “It is remarkable how the church helps our children
grow up in spite of their parents.
