degree of security which will per

Pressure increases daily. Threats,
some subtle, some not, are made
in a variety of important places.
The Arab monarchs have added
their word to the shrill chorus
raised by the Afro-Asian bloc for
punitive economic sanctions. Here,
in Jerusalem, the Israel Cabinet
meets nightly in a series of emerg
ency sessions. In Washington, Is
rael’s Ambassador Eban speaks
first to the State Department,
then to UN’s Dag Hammarskjold.
In Cairo, Colonel Nasser fulmi
nates.

But in the one place where Is
rael’s decision matters most, i.e.,
in the Gaza Strip itself, life is
returning to norma) — and better
than that, because normal (un
der the ineffectual, disinterested
regime of the Egyptians) meant
destitution, unemployment and a
total disorganization. And the
Arabs of the Gaza Strip, natives
and so-called refugees alike, are
making clear their growing desire
that Israel continue her adminis
tration.
A few days ago, the Mayor of
Gaza City, joined by a number of
this town's leading officials, sent
a petition to Col. Haim Gaon,
Gaza’s military governor. Let Is
rael stay, they asked, and we shall
do all that is within our power
to aid her id her effort to better
our lives. In seven other towns
along this narrow, arid ribbon of
land that lies between Egypt and
Israel, the townsmen gathered to
make similar appeals.
There is an affection for Is
rael behind these petitions. There
have been no startling conver
sions. But the facts of a hard life
have made the inhabitants of the
Strip practical. They are worried
lest the firm hand in control be
lifted for them.
The Strip’s businessmen have
started to think of real commerce.
The fishermen have begun to real
ize that there is a market at last
for their excess catch — with all
the profits guaranteed them. The
farmers wait eagerly for the mi
racles of irrigation, promised them
within the next few weeks — and
for the water subsidy which makes
possible new viability for the sun-
dried land on which they work.
The citrus growers have found
themselves possessed of a citrus
marketing board where expert ad
vice is given and distribution aided.
Schoolchildren, somewhat less en
thusiastically, are back at school
—their teachers screened, their
texts purified of Nasser’s brand
of fascism.
Gaza is changing — and chang
ing rapidly. The market places
has opened up. Little wonder,
then, that, here, the 12-week Is
rael occupation is regarded as in
finitely the lesser of two evils.
So while the political cauldron
simmers and bubbles elsewhere,
these men, women and children
who have lived on the fringes
of starvation for eight years, feel
themselves cared for — for the
first time. Cared for by a recent

enemy, to be sure — but one who

Last week, army trucks toured
the Strip. From them, loudspeak
ers blared excerpts of David Ben
Gurion’s addresses to the Knesset
last month in which he repeated
once again the decision of the
Government of Israel to stay in
Gaza until adequate warranties
for peace were given by the Uni
ted Nations. The villagers in the
Strip looked up from their work
and listened. They nodded and
went back to work. There was a
lot of work to be done and no one
could take much time off to won
der how Israel would be dealt
with by the world outside.
Israeli finds
“Hitler Youth”
In Gaza Area
TEL AVIV, (AJP) — Joseph
Schur, a Tel Aviv businessman
returning from a visit to the Gaza
Strip, reported that the Arab
youths he encountered — aged
15 to 25 — “reminded me of the
Hitler Youth. They were all
dangerous loafers,” he said, “who
had been tutored by typical ‘Jug-
endfhuerers.’ ”
Mr. Schur, who is one of the
founders of the Israeli Agudah in
behalf of the Proselytes of the
World, added that "one can per
haps make friends with the peo
ple in the villages, the Fellasheen,
who work on the soil, but not
with this dangerous element in
the towns which is ready to do
anything but an honest day’s
work.”

Jews Barred From
“White Collar” Jobs
NEW YORK, (JTA) — Relig
ious bias still keeps “white collar”
workers out of jobs "on all lev
els, from clerical to professional,"
according to a five-year survey
of six major areas made by the
Anni-Defamation League of B’nai
B’rith.
The report, detailing prejudicial
hiring practices in Chicago, Los
Angeles, San Francisco, Denver,
Pennsylvania and among the col
lege placement bureaus of the
Midwest, was made public here
today by Henry Edward Schultz,
national chairman of the League.
About 18 per cent of 20,000 “white
collar” job vacancies listed for
filing in Chicago in the last six
months barred Jews from consid
eration for those openings, the
survey showed.
In Los Angeles, all but one of
126 employment agencies survey
ed “had agreed to screen out Jews
when referring applicants to pros
pective employers,” the data show
ed. The single agency that had
refused to discriminate against
Jewish job applicants is Jewish-
owned. The same situation exists
in Denver, where 45 out of 46
employment agencies, including
public agencies, had agreed to
service a request for a secretary
with applicants who were “white
Protestant.”
The report commended the
President's Committee on Gov
ernment Contracts, “as a strong
new force in combating job dis
crimination.” But it pointed out

Syrian Paper
Hails Hiller
ROME, (AJP) — The leading
Syrian daily, “A1 Manar,” circu
lated here, has hailed Nasser as
the true counterpart of Hitler.
Writing in a recent issue, editor
Bashir al-Auf, stated:
“One should not forget that, in
contrast to Europe, Hitler occu
pied an honored place in the Arab
world. His name awakened in
Arab hearts feelings of love and
enthusiasm. The Arab world
should be congratulated on pro
ducing in its midst this Hitler
who has shaken the world from
end to end . . , English and
French journalists are mistaken
if they think that by calling Nas
ser Hitler they are hurting us.
On the contrary, his name makes
us proud. Long live Hitler, the
Nazi who struck at the heart of
our enemies! Long live the Hitler
of the Arab world who has open
ed the gates of victory and eter
nity for his people.”
Israel Will Start
Uranium Production
JERUSALEM, (JTA) — Israel
will shortly begin the production
of uranium from phosphate ores
which abound in the Negev, it
was learned here today in in
formed circles.
Equipment has already been
assembled in Israel for the work
and scientists and enginers have
worked out the processes most
suitable for extraction of the vi
tal element from ores. The radio
active material will be produced
as a by-product of the manu
facture of phosphate fertilizers in
Haifa’s chemical plants.
It was also learned today that
Britain recently joined Israel and
France in an agreement on heavy
water research. New methods of
producing heavy water by high
voltage electrolysis are being de
veloped. Israeli scientists made
one of the early major contribu
tions to the progress of peaceful
