Atlanta JC’s Select Haskins
“Man of Year for 1956”
Sidney Haskins, 35-year-old at
torney and civic leader, has been
designated “Atlanta’s Young Man
of the Year" by the Junior
Chamber of Commerce.
The Jaycees selected their for
mer president for the honor,
though Mr. Haskins is no longer
active in the group. The choice
was based on service to the total
Atlanta community. He currently
is president of the Metropolitan
Voting Council, which is devoted
to getting citizens to register and
turn out to cast their ballots dur
ing elections.
The Haskins have two children,
a son Kim, 3, and a daughter
Jill 6. Mr. Haskins is associated
with Smith, Kilpatrick, Cody,
Rogers and McClatchey in the
practice of law.
Mr. Haskins, who is a native
of Macon, attended the Universi
ty of Georgia, graduating in 1942
with a Bachelor of Laws degree.
As an undergraduate he headed
Phi Kappa Literary Society for
two terms, served as president
of Tau Epsilon Phi fraternity
and was business manager of
“The Pandora.” He was a mem
ber of the varsity debate team
for four years and a member of
campus organizations including
Gridiron Club, Omicron Delta
Kappa, Blue Key Society, Inter
national Relations, Scabbard and
Blade and the Pericleans.
He was an active member of the
Atlanta Jaycees for six years and
was president when the group
helped secure passage of an anti
mask bill in City Council. He held
several offices in the Atlanta Jay
cees as well as in the Georgia

Community Chest, Red Cross and
Y.M.C.A. campaigns as well as
such organizations as the Greater
Atlanta II o m e for Convalescent
and Aged, the Atlanta Civic The
atre and Georgia TEPhi Alumni
club, which he served as presi
dent in 1953.
He is a member of the Temple
and has been a Religious School
teacher for two years.
Irving Kaler, president of Gate
City Lodge of B’nal B’rith, was
selected as “Young Man of the
Year" in 1948.
H. Marshall, Sherah
Israel Pioneer, Dies
MACON — Hyman Marshall,
charter member of Congregation
Shearith Israel here, died Janu
ary 30.
The funeral was held January
31 at Hart’s Mortuary, with Rab
bi Charles M. Rubel officiating.
Mr. Marshall had moved to
Macon 56 years ago. He was one
of the pioneers who helped found
Sherah Israel Congregation. He
had served as its president at
one time and at the time of his
death lie held the title of hon
orary president.
His interest in civic and com
munity activities went far beyond
his synagogal affilation and he
took a leading part in many
movements, such as the Masons,
Shriners, Moose, USO work and
others.
He was the founder of Marshall
Furniture Company.
Besides his wife, the former
Annie Becker, he is survived by
a son Milton Marshall, who is
chairman of the Board of Educa
tion for Sherah Israel. He also
leaves two grandchildren, Ger
ald and Judith Marshall.
Mitchell Unveiling
Friends and relatives of Mrs.
Rebecca Mitchell, Jonas and Her
man Mitchell and Mrs. Dora Os-
ter of Tampa are invited to un
veiling ceremonies in memory of
Ben Mitchell at 4:30 p.m. Sunday,
Feb. 24, at Greenwood Cemetery.
Rabbi Emanuel Feldman will of-

lanta Chapter Hadassah are
scheduled for Monday ,Feb. 25.

Aliyah drama, "The Bringer’s
Forth,” produced by program
chairmen, Mrs. Harold Levow,
and Mrs. Sydney Kogan; direct
ed by Mrs. Helen Greenbaum.
The cast includes, Mrs. Sydney
Gulden, Miss Carole Weinman,
Mrs. Dave Alterman, Mrs. Henry
Caplan, Mrs. A1 Robbins, Mrs.
Benj. Mandel, Miss Margie Cohen,
Miss Amy Levow Master Steve
Alterfnan. There will be a “Queen
for A Day" drawing. The lunch
eon meeting is at 12 noon at the
Progressive Club. Mrs. B. Free

Herzlia Group — Mrs. Charles
Weiner, president invites mem
bers to attend meeting at 1:30
p.m. at the Atlanta Jewish Com

eon and card party was held this
week for members and prospec
tive members of the Y.M.H.A.
Miss Jacque Berger, 13 year old
daughter of Mrs. Anne W. Berger
of Aiken, S. C., danced in the
March of Dimes Variety show
last week at the High School au-
ditorum. Jacque has had nine
years of ballet training, studying
at the American School of Ballet
in New York. She conducts a
dance studio in Aiken after school
hours.
Spyros Dalis, an international
lawyer who has been associated
with the UN and now resides in
Augusta, was the speaker at the
February Hadassah meeting.
Rabbi Norman Goldburg ad
dressed the Unitarian Fellowship
of Aiken, S. C. last Sunday on
“The Man Behind the Ten Com
mandments.”
Ira Schneider is confined to St.
Joseph Hospital here.
Kenneth Houch, an outstand
ing interior decorator, spoke on
“Interior Decoration on a Budg
et,” at the recent Temple Sister
hood meeting.
