The eight sons and daughters
gathered in full force in Atlanta
last weekend for the testimonial
tribute to their father, Rabbi To
bias Geffen and Mrs. Geffen,
several with their sons and
daughters.'
And so did members of Con
gregation Shearith Israel and the
community at large. Around 530
Kosher meals were served at the
Jewish Community Center, larg
est group to assemble since jis
recent opening .Many more were
turned away because of lack of
accomodations.

Geffen children, led the visiting
notables in acknowledgement of
Rabbi Geffen’s 46 years’ service
to his congregation.

David Marx, the only other rab
bi who has served an Atlanta
congregation longer than Rabbi
Geffen, was prevented by illness
from attending. He had earlier
however phoned a personal mes
sage of greeting to Rabbi Geffen
through Dr. Irving Greenberg,
who served as master of cere
monies.
Joseph Cuba, secretary of the
Atlanta Jewish Community Coun
cil. who recalled Rabbi Geffen’s
presence at his Bar Mitzvah and
iv voiding, read a message from
Abe Goldstein, president of the
Council, who had been called out
of town and who was unable to
deliver his greetings in jierson.
Arnoog the out-of-town visitors,
besides members of the Geffen
family, assembling for the first
time sn seventeen years for a full
family reunion, were Rabbi
Charles Rubel of Congregation
Shorah Israel in Macon, Mrs. Ru
bel and Cantor D. P. Levine, all
of Macon.
Other highlights of the pro
gram included:
Musical selections by Cantor
Joseph Sehwartzman.
Presentation of a gift to Mrs.
Geffen in behalf of the Shearith
Israel Sisterhood by Mrs. Ida
Goncher, president.
Presentation of a portrait,
painted in oils by Atlanta artist
Lieber Friedenthal, by Barney
Medintz, substituting for Meyer
Balser, who originated the idea
and raised funds for the project.
The portrait was unveiled by
Rabbi Geffen’s grandchildren.
Presentation of a Testimonial
Scroll from Congregation Shearith
Israel by Sidney S. Gulden, pres
ident. The message, caligraphed
by Rabbi Joseph Cohen, had been
translated into Hebrew by Leon

of Atlanta announce the engage
ment of their daughter, Margot
Katherine Baeder, to Howard L.
Weinshenker of Washington, D.
C., son of Mr. and Mrs. Louis J.
Weinshenker of Harriman, N. Y.
Miss Baeder is a graduate of
Henry Grady High School and
Indiana University. Mr. Weinshen
ker, a graduate of Lehigh Uni
versity, is attending Georgetown
University Law Center.
A June wedding is planned.

WHITEVILLE. N.C.—Mr. and
Mrs. J. Herman Leder announce
the engagement of their daughter,
Majorie Sara Leder, to Donald
Harris, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob
Harris of High Point, N. C.
Miss Leder was graduated from
Women’s College in Greensboro,
N. C. f where she was president
of the Inter-Faith Council and
member of the Golden Chain. She
has been an elementary teacher
in Atlanta.
Mr. Harris will graduate from
the University of North Carolina
in June and will enter the medi
cal school of the university in
September.
The wedding will take place
June 30 at the B’nai Israel Syna
gogue in Wilmington, N. C.
AUGUSTA NEWS
Nat Greenblatt is stirring things
up in musical comedy circles in
London. The Experimental The
atre Club ran a competition for
a musical comedy. It was won
by Nat Greenblatt, who is a Duke
University Man, with a satire on
the Colonial Service, but he was
helped by two Scots, Roddy Mc-
rae (lyrics) and Angus Wright
(music).
Dr. and Mrs. Ben Bolgla and
children, and Mrs. Morris Bolgla
spent a few days in Charleston
recently visiting Mr. and Mrs. Sol
Briebart and children.
Duffy’s Tavern Party was held
at the Y. M. H. A. last Saturday.
The Aiken Chapter of Hadassah
held their 10th annual dance last
Saturday evening at the Munici
pal Auditorium.

Mr. and Mrs. J. Harry Altman
of Atlanta announce the engage
ment of their daughter, Muriel
Edith Lewis, to Murray S. Bono
of Savannah, son of Mrs. Gussie
S. Bono and the late Mesod Bob
Bono.
Miss Lewis is a graduate of
Oglethorpe University and is af
filiated with Fields Tall Shop of
Atlanta. Mr. Bono is associated
with Savannah Wholesale Com
pany and the Allied Department
Stores.
The wedding will take place
on March 31 in Atlanta.

Gudel-Lapidus
Miss Diane Linda Gudel be
came the bride of Harold Stanley
Lapidus February 17, at the May-
fair Club. Rabbi Jacob Rothschild
performed the ceremony.
Mr. Lapidus is the son of Mr.
and Mrs. Jacob Lapidus of Pitts
burgh, Penn. He was attended
by his brother Albert Lapidus
as best man. Ushers were Jack
Levin of Atlanta and Arnold Gold
of Pittsburgh.
The bride was given in marriage
by her grandfather, Louis Finkel-
stein of New York. She was at
tended by her sister, Miss Judy
Gudel. as maid of honor.
Following the ceremony, Mrs.
Gudel was hostess at a reception
and luncheon. Miss Jane Robison
kept the bride’s book.
After a wedding trip to New
Orleans the couple will reside at
Ft. Belvoir, Va.

Beverly Hirsh, daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Joe Hirsh, to Mr. Howard
Frank of New York.
SAVANNAH NEWS
The B. B. Chapter of the Youth
of Orthodox Union was host to the
Southeastern regional convention
of Orthodox synagogue youth last
week end. The delegates repre
sented Atlanta, Augusta, Charles
ton, Valdosta and Savannah.
Mrs. Lester Gretenstein has been
appointed chairman of the B’nai
B’rith Women’s stall at the forth-
ciming Purim Ball.
Rabbi A. I. Rosenberg spoke on
“Dual Standards of Brotherhood”
at a Port City Lions Club meet
ing in conjunction with a Na
tional Brotherhood Week program.
The H. G. H. Society of Savan
nah held a memorial program re
cently in the Meddin Assembly
Room of the JEA.
