Ooops, Pardon Our Location-Everything Happens to Us-In the Name of Progress
DEAR GENTLE READERS:
There will be some inconven
ience in the next few months for
the stream of last-minute pub
licity chairmen, mothers bearing
children’s nuptial announcements,
inquisitive school pupils, irate
bill payers, hopeful bill collectors
and otherwise friendly people,
who visit the offices of The South
ern Israelite for one reason or
another.
Construction will allegedly
start next week on the long- de
layed, overdue leg connecting the
east and west super-highway and
our building is smack-dab in the
area. Parts of Peachtree, Forrest
Avenue and Courtland will be
closed to traffic for the duration,
perhaps in rotation or all at once.
We’re not sure at this sitting
just how completely we’ll be af
fected. Our staff may have to
reach the offices by stilts, pole
vault or helicopter and the tons
of newsprint may have to be
toted into the plant by hand. But
publication will go on.
Fortunately, we will not be
isolated. We have utter confidence
that the service which does not
yield to hail, snow or sleet will
not be slowed down by super
highway construction either.
In time, due to the propinquity
of our down-town location, all
Atlantans will know which route
to take to reach our office. Our
friends in doubt as to routes who
must visit in person can dial the
number which a conscience-
numbed automation company fo-
istered on this Jewish newspaper
and the Jewish community and
our operators will be happy to
give directions around whatever
barriers are thrown up.
In the meantime, as in all ad
versity, we look for consolations.
When it is all over, not only will
our readers be able to arrive for
personal visits along the four
thoroughfares which ring the
block, but there will be a fifth
approach as well. They can zoom
into town along the super-dooper
via_ the connecting underpasses
avoiding the block-by-block light
impediments, and then scoot out
at the Currier Stret exit and
there is our office.
And consider too the practical
value of the project to our neigh
boring students — Jewish and
non-Jewish at Emory Dental Col
lege. They can relieve the monot
ony of classroom lectures and
lab work by looking out wind
ows directly across the str*'
and observe the engm'
gaged visibly in la
tractions, canal dra,
and otherwise genera
of regular streets int, a-r
bridge-work of traffic!
Though we’re not s\
earth-moving cranes wv
erating from our roofto
or back yards, the spectacle will
provide added interest to our visi
tors. These stalwart souls are urg
ed to allow an extra five minutes
for possible barrier delays. And
as long as they go so far, they
may as well add another five for
watching the fascia"*' business
of super-hie 1 '- ring hip
boots. and the

Dublin’s Jewish Mayor Coming
To US Mch. 14 for 7 Week Tour

Israel to Leave Gaza, Akaba;
Military Chiefs Decide Details
NEW YORK, (JTA) — Robert
Briscoe, the first Jewish Mayor of
Irish Catholic Dtiblin, will arrive
in the United States March 14
for a seven-week tour of the
United States on behalf of the
United Jewish Appeal and the
Irish Societies of America.
Irving Rockmore of New York
City, the Mayor’s representative,
said Mr. Briscoe will take part
in the New York Saint Patrick’s
Day Parade on March 17 and
in the Boston parade two days
later. The Boston parade was
postponed so that Mayor Briscoe
could participate, Mr. Rockmore
said.
The hundreds of invitations re
ceived by Mr. Briscoe since his
unprecedented election last June
have been handled on a fifty-
fifty basis, Mr. Rockmore said,
so that the Mayor’s appearances
before Jewish and Irish groups
will be in equal proportions.
Although Mr. Briscoe’s tour is
not an official state visit, his ap
pearances are being made with
the cooperation of the Irish Con
sul-General’s office and with the
participation of the many Irish
societies in the United States.
During his tour, Mr. Briscoe
will bid for more tourist travel
in Ireland and speak for the cur
rent United Jewish Appeal Cam
paign, Mr. Rockmore said.
An Orthodox Jew, Mr. Briscoe
observes the Dietary Laws and
all groups which he will address
have been informed about this.
Mr. Briscoe will be accompanied
.by his wife.
The current visit is not the first
for Mr. Briscoe. As a member of
the Sinn Fein, the Irish Nation
alist party, he undertook several
secret missions to the United
States to raise funds and arms
for the Irish rebels. As a Zionist,
he led a 1939 delegation which
sought international support for
settlement of Jews in Palestine,
Mr. Rockmore said.
The Mayor’s American repre
sentative said that unusual co
operation had been shown by the
groups who want to hear Mr.
Briscoe. He said in many cities
where both Jewish congregations
and Irish societies had extended
invitations and the mayor could
not make two appearances the
groups agreed to a combined
meeting.
Mr. Briscoe will return to Ire
land on May 6.
Two groups of the Women’s Di
vision of the 1957 Atlanta Jewish
Welfare Fund campaign have set
dates for campaign events, it was
announced by their chairmen this
week.
Advance Gifts, headed by Mrs.
Milton Rauzin, Mrs. S. Steinbach,
Mrs. Harry K. Stern and Mrs.
Robert Weinstein, will meet Tues
day March 19 for a luncheon
at the Mayfair Club honoring Mrs.
S. Alexander Brailov. Mrs. Brail-

JERUSALEM — Agreement on
the withdrawal of Israel troops

was reached earlier this week be
tween Maj. Gen Moshe Dayan,
Israel’s military chief, and Maj.
Gen. E. L. M. Burns, command
er of the United Nations Emerg
ency Forces, which are to enter
into the evacuated territory.
An official spokesman said that
the Israel Premier had instructed
Gen. Dayan to arrange for a
prompt and full withdrawal from
the Gaza and Akaba areas, in
cluding military and the civilian
administration. The spokesman
stated that Premier Ben Gurion’s
decision was based on President
Eisenhower’s letter and constitu-
Jewish Appeal. As a member of
the UJA Study Mission which was
in Israel last October, Mrs. Brail
ov was an eye witness to im
portant events which occured at
that time when Israel conducted
its defensive march into the Si
nai. She will disclose intimate ob
servations of her experiences at
that time.
Under the chairmanship of Mrs.
Dave Alterman, Mrs. George Al-
terman, Mrs. Bernard Howard and

national community.”
The official added that the
talks last weekend between Is
rael Ambassador Abba Eban .and
Secretary of State Foster Dulles
in Washington yielded nothing
substantial in the form of the
clarifications Israel sought, but
contacts with several governments
during the past few days con
vinced Israel that they would not
permit the return to the pre- Si
nai situation with Gaza as a base
for fedayeen gangs infiltrating
Israel and spreading terror.

Arab state which would form an
economic union with Israel.
In a statement to newsmen in
Gaza, Mayor el Shawa suggested
that three Palestine Arab areas
•—the Gaza Strip, the central “tri
angle” area and part of Jordan
territory — should find a means
of co-existence with Israel. This,
he continued, would constitute a
longterm solution for the Gaza
Strip whose natural economic
hinterland is Israel.
Meanwhile, the Israeli military
governer of the Gaza Strip, Lt.
Col. Matatiyah Peled, said that
if the projected withdrawal of
Israeli troops and administration
were carried out hurriedly the
operation could be completed
within two to three weeks. How
ever, he asserted that a full bri
gade of United Nations troops
would be needed to guard the
border with Israel and maintain
internal security in the Strip.
Col. Peled reported some ex
citement among the residents of
the Strip because of the con
flicting reports about withdrawal.
In response to some worried
queries, he reported, he assured
the inhabitants that Israel would
not leave the territory in chaos
but would hand over the admin
istration carefully.
Reporting on the security situa
tion in the Strip, he said feday
een activities had virtually been
eliminated and some 300 suspect
ed fedayeen had been rounded up
on the basis of a list of 640 cap
tured at fedayeen headquarters
during the Sinai operation of last
November.
