THE PACE QUICKENS
The Southern Israelite is pleased that original plans for
Georgia’s B’nai B’rith Institute are proceeding well and this
Sunday about forty men and women will gather at Jekyll
Island for the first of the significant four days’ program.
A neighboring state during recent years made the initial
plans but the response was so negative that the Institute had
to be cancelled. It will be satisfying not only for the area
but for the Georgia Association of B’nai B’rith Lodges and
District Grand Lodge No. 5 that the Georgia arrangements
will be accomplished. And great the rewards in store for
the men and women who are partaking of this cultural ex
perience. We wish the Jekyll group great success and trust
that the Institute will become an annual event.
We add our congratulations to the District Five officials
who will gather at Wildacres in Little Switzerland, N. C., on
Sunday August 11 to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the
Institute there.
The Wildacre Institute was the start of this B’nai B’rith
program of adult Jewish education which has grown until
in 1957 the idea will bring inspiration to men and women
assembled at 21 centers throughout the nation.
It is an indication of a widening and reawakening interest
in Jewish learning. We commend the persons responsible for
the promotion of the Institutes of Judaism and the men and
women who support it.
ISRAEL'S RIGHTS IN AKABA
GUEST EDITORIAL
If the United States had developed the port of Chicago and
Canada had threatened to block the passage of American
ships through the St. Lawrence River, the situation might
faintly resemble what the State of Israel now faces in its
newly developed port of Elath at the head of the Gulf of
Akaba. Until the State of Israel was established this narrow
streak of water leading north from the Red Sea was hardly
worth noticing. It is a route to the Far East which Israel can
use without dependence on the Nasser-dominated Suez Canal.
Moreover, if the Nasser Government were in this matter a
little more civilized, the Akaba route might be of benefit to
the whole Middle East and not exclusively to Israel. This
newspaper’s correspondent in Cairo reports that members of
the League are now embarking on an “all-out effort to bar
Israeli shipping from the Gulf of Akaba. If seriously under
taken, it could bo nothing more than an attempt to play
politics at the expense of tne general welfare and at the risk
of war. .
The Arab states continue to proclaim their determination to
destroy Israel, a state created under UN auspices, and so
insist on maintaining a “state of war” with Israel enforced by
guerilla warfare and blockade. They are doing so in defiance
of the armistice agreements which call for permanent peace,
in violation of a Security Council decision denying them any
belligerent rights and in repudiation of their own declara
tion affirming the international character of both the Suez
Canal and the Akaba Gulf.

Ike Informs Arab Rulers of
U. S. Stand on Akaba Issue
WASHINGTON, (JTA) — Pres
ident Eisenhower has written per
sonal letters not only to Arabian
King Saud but to heads of other
Arab states to calm rising Arab
resentment over American sup
port of Israeli shipping rights in
the Gulf of Akaba. This was re
ported here this week in official
circles.
The President is understood to
have restated the American po
sition in general support of Is
rael’s right to use the gulf. A
major difference exists between
America and the Arabs on the
definition of Arab territorial
waters. The United States holds
to the view that a three-mile
limit prevails while the Arabs
maintain their territorial waters
extend six miles thus covering
the narrow entrance to the gulf.
A report from Cairo said last
week-end that Saudi Arabia has
begun fortifying the entrance to
the Gulf of Akaba. The report
said the Saudis are placing heavy
artillery at the gulf entrance. If
true, the reports points up the
fact that Saudi Arabia has taken
over from Egypt the burden of
the Akaba Gulf issue.
WASHINGTON, (JTA) — The
White House has denied that the
Rev. Edward L. R. Elson, who is
President Eisenhower’s pastor, is
on a government mission seek
ing Arab-Israel peace. Dr. Elsen,
chairman of the national council
of the “American Friends of the
Middle East,” recently met with
President Nasser in Cairo.
Presidential spokesman James
Haggerty said today Dr. Elson is
travelling with a personal letter
of introduction from President
Eisenhower, but that “in no sense
is he any government emissary."
Dr. Elson’s name was mentioned
after Israeli Premier Ben Gurion
said jn Jerusalem Thursday that
the "head of a certain great pow
er” had asked a noted American
associated with a Christian relig
ious organization to initiate con
tacts with Nasser that might lead
to peace talks. Mr. Ben Gurion
said the envoy returned "with
empty hands."
Dr. Elson met with Nasser on
June 29 in Cairo. He is en route
to Saudi Arabia, where he is
scheduled to have an audience
with King Saud. It was indicated
that after his return to Washing
ton he will undoubtedly brief the
President on his impressions as
CHICAGO, (JTA) — A plea
for Jewish women to educate
themselves and their communities,
its people, and its needs was made
in an address by Samuel A.
Goldsmith, executive vice-presi
dent of the Jewish Federation of
Chicago at a leadership confer
ence of Women’s Division from
11 states held at the Palmer
House here. The conference was
held under the sponsorship of
the Council of Jewish Federations
and Welfare Funds.
Mr. Goldsmith, the keynote
speaker, appealed for a broad and
profound knowledge of all aspects
of communal work. He stated
that Jewish life in the United
States was not segmented but re
presented many varying facets.
In his comments he noted that
the responsibilities of Jewish fed
erations and welfare funds includ
ed the building of a total rather
than a fragmented approach and
thus, with an intelligent under
standing, would be more capable
of meeting challenges.
He noted that economic stand
ards have risen and that people
expect more, and consequently,
social planning will require larg
er sumss of money. He also noted
that community planning is af
fected further by a tremendous
ly increasing and mobile popu
lation. The position of women
likewise is changing, he said.

standard for women today. They
