PLAIN TALK
By Alfred Segal
Chuck meets Rosh Hashona
Last Rosh Hashona my friend
Chuck, a fellow newsman on the
daily paper for which I write, in
vited himself to be my guest at
the service in the synagogue.
Sure, Chuck, come along, I said.
Chuck’s a guy not only with deep
reverential respect for other re
ligions than his own (he’s Cath
olic) but he’s also one with a
sharp nose for news. Chuck’s
newsy nose desired to stick itself
into one of the ways of Jewish
religion . . . that is to say, to
learn how Jews go about their
own New Year by contrast with
the way the New Year of Jan-

uary 1 is observed.
Chuck had felt horribly dis
tressed by happenings around
town on the January 1 of that
year. A guy had shot another in
a drunken brawl in the early
morning of that day. Chuck him
self had just retired at about mid
night when he was awakened by
a terrific crash on the street just
in front of his house. He dressed
hurriedly, ran into the street and
found an automobile turned over
on its top. Inside, the driver lay
crumpled, dead. The automobile
had travelled drunkenly out of its
lane and had met a bus head-on,
as Chuck found out from witness
es he interviewed.
That wasn’t all of that New
Year’s tragic events. Next day’s
newspapers reported hundreds
killed on highways on New Year,
to say nothing about drunken
fights among crowds in hotels.
In journalistic meditation
Chuck told me something sure
should be done to make the eve
of January 1 safer . . . “How
silly,” he said, “that people start
off a New Year in these ways.
Why can’t the eve of January 1
be given some moral and spiritual
significance, even though we
continue to hold on to it joyous
ly.”
“Chuck,” I replied, “maybe it
would be of some good for people
to be told how the Jews observe
their New Year in September.”
That still in mind, Chuck asked
me to take him along to our tem
ple on Rosh Hashonah of the
same year.
I handed Chuck our Union
Prayer book as we seated our
selves. He read the first lines
of the morning service for Rosh
Hashona: “Raise the voice of joy
unto the Lord, all ye lands. Serve
the Lord with gladness; come be
fore His presence with singing
. . . For the Lord is good, His
mercy is everlasting and His
truth endureth to all generations.”
“That’s it,” Chuck whispered.
“That’s the way to start off a new
year right. It gives a big idea for
starting January 1.”
The temple was crowded . . .
every seat taken ... “This crowd,”
he said, “is bigger even than any
you might see in one of the
hotels on the eve of January . . ,
and all very sober ... all speak
ing to God ... all thinking how
to make the best of your New
Year.”
(I wouldn’t have you get the
idea that Chuck is a fellow who
doesn’t know his way around in
the wilder life of the world. I
have found him congenial com
pany at our favorite bar where
he drinks old fashioneds. But
Chuck knows well the better ways
of living; though he has been one
of the best of our newsmen, he
counts his main success in the
fact that he has brought up a
good son who is studying for the
Catholic clergy.)
The Rosh Hashona service con
tinued. The rabbi was reading to
God: “Gather all Thy Children
around Thy banner of truth that
Thy Name may be hallowed
through us in all the world and
the entire human family may be
blessed with truth and peace.”
“You people have the right idea
.V.VAVWWWAWWWW.’,
DAWN of a new day . . . and a new year. Hopes
rise with the sun when its golden glow gilds all our
prospects. May all the promises of 5718 be fulfilled.
This is our wish to you.
