Arabs Cancel Boycott
of Firm Insisting
on Trade With Israel
JERUSALEM, (JTA) — Israel
sources reported this week a de
cision of the Arab boycott office
in Alexandria to cancel the Arab
blacklisting of British Imperial
Chemical Industries which resis-
ed Arab pressures to stop doing
business with Israel.
The Alexandria move followed
a second refusal by the British
chemical firm to stop operations
in Israel. The company’s stand
was contrasted here with that of
Shell which yielded to Arab de
mands and announced last year
it would end all sales operations
in Israel.
... of Israeli Interest
By JACOB BAAL-TESHITVA
Singer Harry Bclafonte, cur
rently appearing at the Waldorf-
Astoria Empire Room, is expect
ed to visit Israel in July, 1958, to
participate in the country’s 10th
anniversary celebrations. One of
his greatest hit songs, which sold
over a million records, is the well
known Israeli song Hava Xagilali
Sha K. Ophir, Israel pantomime
comedian who appears nightly at
the only Israeli nightclub in New
York — Leo Fund’s Sabra — is
preparing a one-man show to be
performed all over the country.
Chana Aharoni, Israel’s young
singing star, is currently Europe’s
and Latin America’s latest sen
sation.
Simon Finkel, leading actor of
Israel’s Habimah Theatre, arrived
in New York this week.
Comedian Myron Cohen will be
among the many American stars
visiting Israel during the 10th an
niversary' in 1958.
BEHIND UN SCENES
Year of Decision for Israel
by DAVID HOROWITZ
UNITED NATIONS, (AJP’—
As viewed from this UN vantage
point, the year 1958 must of a
necessity prove decisive for Is
rael in many ways. Whether for
good or bad will depend a great
deal not so much on the external
circumstances but on the unity of
purpose of the Government it
self.
The recent confusion regarding
military aid from Germany, end
ing in the fall of the B.G. Govern
ment, points up the difficulties
that face the young state in a
world trembling with enormous
shifts in power.
The incident itself reveals to
what extent the impact of these
massive crashes of power already
have on the Inner political forces
of the sole non-Arab nation in
the Middle East. They point up
the quest of Israel for a definitive
policy which is now its crying
need.
What happened is plain enough.
Ben Gurion, acting on a level of
the highest national security, de
cided to send a military mission
to Germany to arrange for the
purchase of certain types of arm
aments. Although such matters are
top security in the most urgent
sense, it is to be presumed that
the decision was based on intelli
gence regarding the types of
arms which have reached Syria
and Egypt from the Soviet Union
and Czechoslovakia and the need
to meet them promptly in these
days of rapid weapon develop
ments.
Unfortunately, the plan was
leaked to the press by the leftist
members of the Cabinet, thus em
barrassing the Bonn regime and
compelling it to disassociate itself
from the deal. It is easy enough
to understand the Bonn apparent
renege—assuming, as we must,
that there was a commitment —
when we recall how much the
Arabs have threatened economic
boycott against German concerns
if aid is given to Israel.
What is less easy to understand
is how the debacle developed in
Jerusalem. And here it is essen
tial to understand the vast forces
which are developing in the world
of 1958 and which are upsetting
the plans not only of Israel but
even of the bigger and more firm
ly established states. The fact is
that the cold war is continuing
despite all talk of negotiations
with Moscow. It is continuing in
bigger dimensions — military, po
litical and economic. It is shifting
from Europe to Africa and Asia.
Both NATO and Moscow have
announced policies of new and
bigger aid to these regions. In
Africa and Asia, the cold war will
be fought out with new strategies,
with new imponderables for Is
rael. Any intensification of the
cold war is bad for Israel which
stands at the crossroads of the
two colonial continents.
The fact that Secretary Dulles
will personally head the U.B.
“Observer” mission to the meet
ing of the Baghdad Pact nations
this month — in line with the
new strategy to create some unity
of action between NATO, Sea to,
the Baghdad Pact and even the
Latin American states — proves
this point. It is a global strategy
involving the relations of groups
and alliances rather than of indi
vidual countries in a world in
which Israel stands alone.
Indeed, Israel’s isolation was
accentuated last week by the Af-
ro-Asian Peoples’ Solidarity Con
ference in Cairo. Here Israel was
condemned as an “aggressive”
base of Western Imperialism. De
spite this fact, the Western states
headed by the U.S. continue to
curry the favor of these anti-
Israel forces in the hope that
such action will strengthen their
position in the cold war.
This is the gigantic problem the
Israeli state must confront. To
solve it will tax the limits of
Jewish genius not only in Israel
but throughout the world. This
WE TOP

is not time for inter-party strife
and jealousies. 1958 calls for a
Coalition in which all the major
parties in Israel should be re
presented.
Boston Jewry Nixes
Listing of Religion
on Drivers License
BOSTON, (JTA — The Jew
ish Community Council of Metro
politan Boston opposes a new bill
in the state legislature which
would require a statement of re
ligious affiliation on the license
certificates of Massachusetts au
tomobile drivers.
Sponsors of the bill contend it
would be helpful to know the
religion of drivers so that, in the
event of a fatal accident, the
proper clergyman could be ad
vised.
Alvin Tamkin, chairman of the
Council’s legal and legislative
committee, said that adoption of
the measure would "create a temp
tation for bias, and would also
impose an unnecessary adminis
trative burden” on the Massachu
setts Registry of Motor Vehicles.
Council officials also feel there
would be an issue of infringe
ment of civil liberties in such a
law.
