THE SOUTHERN ISRAELITE
Pace Nte«
Southeastern Regional
Conference of
Regional Pres. Stresses
Universal Peace
DEAR COLLEAGUES:
As I write this letter the pages
of our calendar are turning to a
New Year, and I ask myself, just
as all mankind must be wonder
ing, what does 1958 hold in store
for us.
As Americans we watch with
bated breath every move and
every expression of the leaders in
our government. We are deeply
concerned over Russia’s fabulous
achievement in outer space — the
Sputnik riding hundreds of miles
above the earth, stirring man’s
imagination and filling his heart
with hope that perhaps from the
genius of this little moon with its
vast potentialties for good or evil,
will finally come a message for
universal peace. But meantime
Sputnik has shattered our secur
ity program and speculations for
the future follow each other with
a speed and intensity equalled only
by this compelling achievement-
Sputnik has erased our confidence
in the traditional armaments and
in the durable value of military
bases which we believe made us
invulnerable.
On the other side of the ledger,
Sputnik is clearing the way for a
scientific inquiry not only into our
security program but also into our

whole educational program. If we
are striving for universal peace,
our educational program and ex
perimentation must lead not only
to the conquest of space with all
its implications, but it must pro
vide a desire for learning and un
derstanding so that a new moral
ity may be evolved for man to
live by. This must be done if we

WELCOME TO ATLANTA
From Pres, of Hostess Chapter
In the true spirit of southern
hospitality, and in the name of the
Atlanta Chapter of Hadassah it is
my privilege and pleasure to wel
come you, our many delegates and
guests to the 21st Annual South
eastern Regional Conference to be
held in Atlanta on February 24-26,
at the Briarcliff hotel.
A conference affords us the op
portunity to blend the best in each
of us; to renew old friendships
and make new ones; to evaluate
our past accomplishments; to give
and to gain in an exchange of
ideas. Ours must be a continuing!
partnership, rededicated and
strengthened to meet the chal
lenge of our times with our deep
est devotion and sacrifice.
Enthusiastically our conference
committee, ably headed by Mrs.
Philip Schwartz and Mrs. Robert
M. Travis chairmen, with Mrs.
Morris Frank and Mrs. I- D. Shap
iro coordinators, report that
much serious thought, time and
planning has gone into the prep
arations, making this conference
one you will long remember,
with a few distinct features,
which we hope will add to your
pleasure. Everything has been
planned with you in mind. Time
has been allotted for serious de
liberation, mental stimulation and

fun.
We value the close ties which
have been established in our reg
ion. Help us do a better job by
sending in your reservations and
schedule of arrival as quickly as
possible—we will do the rest.
With warm Hadassah greetings,
and looking forward to seeing you
in Atlanta in February.
DORA SMITH
President, Atlanta Chapter
Atlanta Georgia February 24 - 25 - 26
National Vice President
To Advise Conference
Mrs. D. Leonard Cohen, of
Westport, Conn., will be the ad
visor to the Twenty-first Annual
Conference of the Southeastern
Region of Hadassah. In addition,
Mrs. Cohen will be the guest
speaker at the Hadassah Medical
Organization luncheon on Mon
day, February 24th. She is espe
cially well qualified to discuss
the HEART OF HADASSAH as
she is National chairman of the
Hadassah Hebrew University
Medical Center.
Reared in an intensely Jewish
atmosphere, Mrs. Cohen received
an excellent Hebrew education
and has been vitally interested
in Zionism and Jewish affairs
since her early youth. As a child
she was an active Young Judaean.
Her later training included studies
at the Teachers Institute of the
Jewish Theological Seminary.
Following her journalism
studies at New York University,
Mrs. Cohen entered the newspa
per and magazine field. She serv
ed as Assistant Editor of “The
New Palestine,” an organ of the
Zionist Organization of America;
Assistant Editor of the “Jewish
Tribune,” Editor of “Home and
Food,” and Editor of “Good
Food.” Her work with the Zionist
publications brought her into in
timate contact with the great
leaders of American Zionism.
A mother and business woman,
Mrs. Cohen has also found time
for many outside activities. She
served on the board of the Park
Avenue Synagogue Sisterhood
and as a Trustee of the Walden
School in New York. At present,
she is a member of the congre
gation at the Temple Beth-El in
Norwalk, Conn.; and active in the
Mental Health Association.
Hadassah has long been of deep
concern to her and she has been
a member for more than twenty-
five years. That interest was in
tensified when she visited Israel
with her husband in 1950 and saw
at first-hand the daily miracles
MRS. I). LEONARD COIIEN
which Hadassah was working in
that land. She returned, determ
ined to play an important role in
insuring the success of the Hadas
sah program. She was also a dele
gate to the 1956 World Zionist Or
ganization. In 1957 Mrs. Cohen
went to Israel on a special mis
sion on behalf of our organization.
Judith Epstein Is
Banquet Speaker
An exciting climax to the 21st
Annual Conference of the South
eastern region of Hadassah will
be the banquet address by Mrs.
Moses P. Epstein of New York.
Few women on the American
scene have had as strong an im
pact on the Jewish community as
has Mrs. Epstein, member of the
Zionist Actions Committee, Edi
tor of the Hadassah Newsletter
and former Chairman of the
American Affairs program of Ha
dassah. She has just returned
from an Actions Committee meet
ing in Israel.
A former National President of
Hadassah, she is a charming and
dynamic woman who has traveled
the highways and byways of the
United States for more than three
decades to interpret to the Amer
ican people the aims and aspira
tions, first of the Jewish com
munity in Palestine and, in more
recent years, of the State of Is
rael.
Mrs. Epstein is ideally equipped
to interpret the dreams of Israel’s
pioneers, having been bom into
a family that settled in this coun
try more than a century ago and
knew at first hand the rigors of
frontier life.
Her grandfather, who came to
America in 1846, prospected for

also worked in the newly-discov-
