New World Jewish
Body Protest Soviet
Treatment of Jews
ROME, (AJP)—Jewish leaders,
representing organizations in the
five continents, instituted a new
Jewish world body to be known
as the ‘‘Conference of Jewish
Organizations” at a plenary
meeting held here last week.
One of the first tasks taken up
by the new body concerned the
treatment of Jews in the Soviet
LTnion. A Conference statement
declared: “The situation of the
Jews in the Soviet Union con
stitutes one of the central prob
lems of our generation. It is the
duty of our group to draw the
attention of world public opin
ion to their plight and seek to
secure redress of the wrongs
they suffer.
Organizations participating in
the Conference included: Ameri
can Jewish Congress, B’nai B’rith,
Board of Deputies of British
Jews, Canadian Jewish Congress,
Sonseil Representatif des Juis de
France, Delegation de Assoeia-
tiones Israelitas Argentinas, Ex
ecutive Council of Australian
Jewry, Jewish Labor Committee,
South African Jewish Board of
Deputies, World Jewish Congress,

IN A LIGHTER VEIN
Playing On The Enemy's Sentiments
By JACOB RICHMAN
There is a story of the World War that does credit alike to Jewish
patriotism and ingenuity.
It seems that a Jewish boy of the American Expeditionary Forces
used to steal out of his trench every night, during the few hours of
ominous gloom and silence, when the batteries ceased to scatter death
and destruction, and return each time with ten or fifteen captives from
the enemy’s camp.
This feat, repeated continually by the young hero, was a puzzle
to all his comrades; and despite their repeated inquiries he refused
to divulge the secret of his military success.
Finally he was summoned to headquarters, and after commending
him for his heroism, the army dignitaries questioned him as to his
technique of warfare.
“How th* heck to do you manage to do that?” they marvelled.
“And what is your method?”
“My method is simplicity itself,” replied the Jewish strategist,
with a beautific smile. “I sneak up to the enemy’s trenches and call
out in Yiddish: ‘Yidden, ich darf a minyan auf kaddish’ (Fellow-Jews,
I need ten men to say ‘Kaddish’), and instantly ten or fifteen Jews
pop up to accomodate me. Whereupon I make them prisoners.”

“Long Day’s Journey Into
Night,” Eugene O’Neill’s Pulitzer
Prize winning play currently on
Broadway, will be performed in
Israel this season in Hebrew by
the Habimah Theatre. Eartha
Kitt, who learned Hebrew songs
fluently while on a recent con
cert tour in Israel, demonstrated
her new talent on December 23
in Madison Square Garden during
the Hanukah festival sponsored
by Israel Bonds. Inbal, the dance
theatre of Israel, opened its
first American tour January 6
for a 3-week engagement at the
Martin Beck Theatre in New
York. Elabell Davis, American
Negro singer, is currently appear
ing successfully in a concert tour
in Israel. Two major American
film companies are considering
the possibilities of filming the life
story of General M o s h e Dayan.
Romeo and Juliet, in its brilliant
Hebrew version, is currently be
ing performed with great success
in Tel Aviv by the Chamber
Theatre. Theodore Bikel, former
Israeli actor, is currently appear

dispatch from Boon, Handler
stated that the press was unani

In another dispatch from Ber
