Groups Join Shule
In St. Louis Suburb
Building Fight
ST. LOUIS, iJTA) — The
American Jewish Congress and
the St. Louis Rabbinical Asso
ciation asked the Missouri Su
preme Court this week for per
mission to file a brief as friend
of the court in support of the
right of Temple Israel here to
build a chapel and Sunday
School in Suburban Creve Coeur.
The two organizations filed a
joint motion for leave to appear
as amicus curiae in the case,
which is scheduled for the Sep
tember 1958 term. Similar mo
tions to appear in the case were
filed by the Metropolitan Church
Federation of St. Louis and
Catholic Archbishop Joseph Rit
ter, head of the St. Louis Arch
diocese.
Both the Protestant church
group and Archbishop Ritter
filed briefs supporting Temple
Israel when the case was tried
by St. Louis County Circuit
Judge Raymond LaDriere last
year. Judge LaDriere’s decision
handed down August 5, 1957,
ruled in favor of Temple Israel
and held that two zoning ordi
nance amendments under which
Creve Coeur denied a building
permit to the Temple were in
valid.
Judge LaDriere also ruled the
amendments violated the right
of free exercise of religion guar
anteed by the First and Four
teenth Amendments to the U.S.
Constitution and by the Missouri
Constitution. Creve Coeur offi
cials then decided to appeal the
decision to the Missouri Su
preme Court, despite wide fav
orable comment on the lower
court’s decision.

U.S. Foundation
Donates $100,000
To Hebrew Univ.
NEW YORK, (JTA)—A gift of
$100,000 by the Jacob Levy
Foundation will be used for the
erection of a building on the
new campus of the Hebrew Uni
versity at Givat Ram, Jerusalem,
it was announced here this week
by Daniel G. Ross, president of
the American Friends of the
Hebrew University.
The new building, already un
der construction is to be called
the “Jacob Levy Building for
Economics and Social Sciences,”
in honor of the late Jacob Levy,
prominent New York Jew who
died here in 1951 at the age of
76. Mr. Levy started as a news
boy, worked as a clerk and later
organized the construction firm
of Levy Brothers. In 1898, he
graduated with the LL. B. de
gree from New York Univer
sity’s Law School.
Barbaras!! Scores Ben Gurion
Over His \ iews on U. S. Jewry
NEW YORK. (Ajr' Present
ing his “Point of View” in the
current -.<sue of the American
Zionist. Editor Ernest E Barbar-
as.h has again taken Premier
David Ben Gurion to task for
voicing the opinion—before the
recent Hadassah delegation to
Israel—that "Religion was no
longer, and had not been for
decades, a bond uniting and con
solidating all Jews.”
Stating that "B G is obsessed
with his 'Messianic Mission’,"
the militant Zionist Editor wrote:
“Specifically dealing with
American Jewry, he (B.G.) cited
as supporting evidence ‘the de
cline of Yiddish and the fact
that most American Jews speak
English.’
“What has Yiddish and Eng
lish to do with the decline or
rise of religion?” Barbarash asks.
"Most of the free thinkers I
know speak Yiddish and count
less God-fearing people speak
English . . . B.G. further said
that only a small proportion of
the people who attend synagogue
are familiar with the 613 Com
mandments of the Jewish faith
and that assimilation has de
veloped to the extent that 90%
of America’s younger generation
does not know anything about
Judaism. It would be interesting
to know,” Barbarash adds, “how
many American Jews B.G. has
given a test as to their knowl
edge of the 613 Commandments.
Supposing some of them only
knew 400. Would he class them
as assimilationists? Even if some
knew only 200, would he write
them off as conscientious Jews?
Supposing a Jew only knows ten
Commandments, would he be ex
cluded from the Jewish fold?
And where did B.G. get the fig
ure of 90% ? Maybe it is only
70% 50%. . .
“B.G. will go down in history
as a great statesman and war
rior,’’ Barbarash concludes. “But
as a prophet of doom insofar as
Zionism and Diaspora Jewry are
concerned, his is a false pro
phecy.”
