reasons which had sent them be
hind these stone walls ... as
their punishment isolated to
them as individuals. Or was
their being there a symbol of
society’s febrile efforts to create
deterrents? Was it these men
who were being punished, or
was it not society also, knowing
no better way . . .
The itimacy of their thoughts
and history was something 1
had now to respect. They had
gathered voluntarily to partici
pate in religious services, with
out knowing whether Mr. Jacobs
would bring a visiting speaker.
Perhaps if the word had gotten
around, the group may have
been as large as thirty or forty.
There are not many more there
now, though Mr. Jacobs remem
bers when they were at least 250
Jewish men behind those walls.
Perhaps if they had known there
would be a visitor more may
have shied away . . .
It is easy for a person who has
been immersed in Jewish journ
alism for nearly two decades to
talk volubly about his profes
sion. The historial notes helped
tie in the role of the English-
Jewish press today with the
panorama of newspapers and
magazines which have serviced
Jewish communities and organi
zations in Europe, in Asia, and
in Israel since that Amsterdam
periodical first appeared . . .
I mentioned specifically the
vibrant Yiddish press, which in
its heyday encouraged such
geniuses as Sholem Aleichem . .
The men had sat attentative
and motionless and now were
asking rather penetrating ques
tions about policy and practices,
whether the Jewish press today
is subsidized, whether the first
Amsterdam press appeared when
the Sephardic Jews first left
Spain . . .
Suppose, one of your readers
has a copy of Sholem Aleichem’s
“Three Cities,” they are not
using. “We’d like to have it at
the library,” One man was say
ing.
“Would you like it in Yid
dish?” I asked.
He squirmed embarrassingly
and said, “No, in English.” This
amused several of the others
and they laughed.
I promised to relay this re
quest to my readers. (If any has
this copy and wishes to contri
bute it to the prison library, we
will be glad to know about it
and relay the volume to its in
tended source.)
It was 9 a.m. and time to
leave. The men were still ask
ing questions. They gathered
around and several shook rny
hand in appreciation.
There was a minute yet be
fore the elevator would return
for another load. Mr. Jacobs
pointed the way into the Catholic
chapel which was now nearly
empty. A few were still knealing
in prayer. A priest at the far
end was gathering his paraphe-
nalia . . . “Those pictures were
all painted by prisioners, some
of them Jewish,” Mr. Jacobs ex
plained. They were fine exam
ples of oil paintings and seemed
to serve an excellent purpose in
setting a religious atmosphere in
the chapel.
Downstairs, Mr. Jacobs intro
duced the kindly looking ward
en. I asked about the change in
policy which had recently per
mitted us to print photos and
actual names of prisoners. Pre
viously there had been a regula
tion requiring photos of prison
ers to be eliminated and the men
pictured either in rear profile
or with faces blanked out.
“There has been softening of
this policy,” he said. “But we
have to be careful not to exploit
anyone . . . First we ask whether
the man has any objection . . ”
Mr. Jacobs had meanwhile
punched the clock again and
gathered up our rain gear . . The
doors had opened and shut auto-

INTRODUCING A NEW COLUMN
"THE RABBI ANSWERS"
By DR. REUBEN LUCKENS
The author of this new column is Rabbi Dr. Reuben Luckens,
lecturer and a practicing physician. His aim in the column is to
pray?
ANSWER: We should pray
with emotion, with song, tears
and joy: our hearts must be
open and our minds be full of
understanding. A Hassidic Rab
bi once said: "Praying in a loud
tone of voice brings feeling into
all your limbs.” Therefore, pray
with all your heart and soul,
your mind and body, and your
prayers will ascend and be
heard.
help our readers develop a religious program of living leading
to spiritual health, contentment and peace.
Readers having any questions with which to confront The
Rabbi are invited to write him care of this publication or to

POWER OF PRAYER
QUESTION: Can Thoughts be
controlled by prayer?
ANSWER: Yes. Thoughts,
which arc really manifestations
of the mind, are all powerful
and forge our fate for better or
worse. With the aid of specific
prayers and specific Psalms, we
impose good and positive
thoughts and invoke help from
the one great Divine Source. One
of the attributes of God is His
responsiveness to prayer, and
when we learn to pray, at a
fixed time, regularly, and with
real sincerity, God answers our
specific prayers. The important
point is learning how to pray
and making it a regular part of
living.

QUESTION: Can prayer help
heal our minds and bodies?
ANSWER: Yes. As an exam
ple, Jews in their daily prayers,
say: “Heal us, O Lord, and we
shall be healed; save us, O
Lord, and we shall be saved.”
This prayer is not prayed in vain,
because “prayer is the bridge
matically. Somebody had picked
up my pass and I had written
the time out alongside my sig
nature . . .
Another group of visitors lined
the vestibule corridor waiting to
go inside . . .
We were walking down the
steps, and away. My speaking
engagement was over.

that carrieth man to God,” and
God is always ready to help man,
if man is humble and ready to
pray with his whole being to
his Creator.
