the retraining of Jewish refugees.
That was a decade ago. The
school has grown in the interven
ing years, its enrollment will be
over 1,500 pupils.
Though it is a trade school, the
ORT center at Montreuil is in
fact the largest Jewish school in
France and possibly in Europe.
The youngsters in the day ses
sion high school study Hebrew,
Jewish history, the history of
Israel, conduct their weekly "Oneg
Shabbats,” and observe the holi
days.
Above all, there is a Jewish
spirit in the air here. There is
more than one instance of a
young student, under the school’s
influence, having been instru
mental in bringing his parents
back to an active sense of Jewish
belonging.
Many of the youngsters in the
day-session high school course
are war orphans. 40 per cent are
of North African origin. 60 per
cent are from low-income fami
lies, they could not come to school
at all without the stipends, the
hot meals and the clothing that
are provided.
Among the thousands who pass
ed through the portals of this
school in its first decade were
displaced Jews from all over
Europe. But today the great
majority of students, young and
old, are French. The school func
tions as a community service and
as an aid to the economy, with
close ties to the French Ministry
of Labor.
The present graduating class, in
appreciation of the ILGWU’s gift
ten years ago, has been given the
name: ‘‘Graduation Dubinsky.” It
is a well-deserved tribute.
A DANGEROUSLY
NARROW LEDGE
Humanity today is treading a
dangerously narrow ledge, criti
cally poised between the upward
ascent and the depthless abyss.
With the power of unlimited
energy harnessed to ever more
diabolical weapons, we face the
possibility not only of universal
slaughter, but of tainting with dis
ease and deformity the future hu
man, plant and animal life of our
planet. This is not only an hour
when leaders and nations must
proceed with the utmost caution,
lest a miscalculation plunge man
kind into irretrievable disaster;
it’s equally risky to stand still and
become increasingly the prey of
fear and panic.
We must go forward to some
measure of positive agreement be
tween governments to relieve the
mood of tension and to create a
climate of confidence. The wis
dom of Judaism suggests that we
cannot wait passively and expect
antly for world peace. The goal
must be ardently and constructive
ly sought, with bold and imagina
tive measures.
