BAR MITZVAH
(Continued from Page 26)
assured that he was an old hand
at this sort of thing, and had con
ducted dozens and dozens of young
men through this service. His
guiding hand, at the proper time,
did the job.
Bar Mitzvah means “Son of the
Commandment,” and "good deed.”
Once through Bar Mitzvah, the
boy is then responsible for his
own spiritual welfare. Kenney,
and members of the congregation,
wore skull caps and prayer shawls,
traditional.
For the serious, yet joyous af
fair, Kenny’s great grandfather,
grandfather, uncle, and other kins
men had come many hundreds of
miles.
Because of the many non-Jewish
friends present, Rabbi Joseph
M. Reich very graciously conduct
ed what was an almost double
service. After giving the Hebrew
version, he would recite it in
English.
The Bar Mitzvah opens with
the candidate repeating a bless
ing in Hebrew, pieparatory to
reading the Torah—or Laws. All
of the service is chanted, rather
than read. This is an exacting task
indeed, as it follows a difficult
and traditional musical pattern.
There was an indescribable beauty
and solemnity in Kenny’s youth
ful treble as this boy-man led his
elders in worship.
After reading the Torah, Kenny
recited another prayer in Hebrew’
prior to reading the Haftorah.
Then came a speech in English,
thanking his parents, relatives,
rabbi, teacher, and friends, for
their assistance, in his well-pre
pared and delivered speech, which
he wrote himself, Kenny pledged
eternal faith to his Temple,
friends, family and country.
In conclusion, he conducted an
Adoration service. Highlight of
this impressive ritual, which I
may have described technically
imperfectly here, was of course
the Torah reading. In addition to
relatives and congregation offi
cials, two youngsters who had
completed Bar Mitzvah just pre
vious to Kenny’s, took part. One
opened and closed the Ark, w’hile
the other held the Scroll for read
ing, in this most impressive event.
After the long service. Rabbi
Reich and Kenny jointly said
grace, preceding the traditional
joyous reception, with its splendid
food, drink and fellowship.
Congratulations Kenny, in your
year of 5719. I’m sure your par
ents are proud. I must add that
during your fine performance you
had Goya prayers going out in
your behalf—mine and those of
the Rev. Wiliam Lineback, pastor
of the First Christian Church
here, who was seated next to me.
We both felt very honored to be
included in this, your biggest day.
