As Dr. Weinstein labelled him,
“a dividend” by the name of Perli
Pelzig appeared on the scene. A
native of Hamburg, Germany, Perli
escaped in 1939 to Israel where he
is a citizen. He, his wife, and two
children have been in Atlanta for
the past years, and it is his beau
tiful mosaic art work you see
when you enter our lovely new
Atlanta Jewish Community Cen
ter.
Perli Pelzig, one of the leading
artists of the world, attended the
Academy of Arts and Crafts in
Berlin, and has continued his study
all over the world, ever since. At
the modest age of 40. he is a
master of graffito, an Italian art
form. He has decorated Israeli
movies, apartments, hotels, and
ships with his work, including
sgraffito, mosaics, and water-col
ors. Most interesting was the mov
ie he brought showing him at
work, and also some exciting sam
ples of his work which decorated
the hotel until our departure.
Students who attended the In
stitute and who themselves play
ed such an important part in mak
ing it the completely satisfying ex
perience it was, included:

This is all about a speech I heard
at lunch recently. Ordinarily, I sel
dom burden this column with
anybody’s speaking but my own.
But this was a speech that sounded
like one of our prophets talking
... a voice to put in this column
rather than my own.
It was a good lunch all right . . .
fried chicken and all that . . . but
as so seldom happens at such af
fairs, the guests liked the speech
even better than the food. As you
may know, a speech after lunch
generally puts you almost to sleep.
In fact, at this luncheon the oth
er guests around me seemed to
grow wider and wider awake, felt
lifted up instead of to drowsiness
by the fried chicken. After lunch
and speech were over, I went up
to the speaker and told him I
thought he sounded like a pro
phet.
“Well,” he replied meekly, “to
sound like a prophet may come
from going to cheder when one is
a boy. If a cheder boy is a diligent
pupil he may derive something
from the Biblical prophets with
whom he associated in cheder. You
see, I attended cheder.”
“So did I,” I observed. “I, too,
went to cheder, but, it seems, I
didn’t get the prophet touch.”
The man’s name: Philip M.
Klutznick. You may know of him
as national president of B'nai B’-
rith but he w'as at that luncheon
as one of the U. S. representatives
to the 12th regular session of the
General Assembly, United Nations.

this place in United Nations yet he
spoke for it as one who had had
long experience of it. I could guess
that it was cheder teaching of long
ago that enabled him to speak so
eloquently for United Nations
ideals long later. United Nations
are out of Old Testament, you
might say.
From cheder teaching Klutznick
had quoted Isaiah: “And many
nations shall come and say. ‘Come
let us go up to the mountain of
the Lord . . . and he will teach us
His way and we will walk in his
paths . . . and they shall beat their
swords into plowshares and their
spears into pruning hooks; nation
shall not lift sword against nat
ion, neither shall they learn war
anymore.”
What our own Isaiah said is
the ideal of United Nations, and
Klutznick told us that Isaiah’s
words . . . “this writing of anti
quity is engraved on the stone wall
of the palisade across the street
from the United Nations building.”
He meant that United Nations is
searching toward the fulfillment
of Isaiah’s words . . . “A world in
search of the spiritual strength and
the human wisdom that can dom
inate the awesome powers of the
atomic age which we have thrust
upon ourselves,” he added.
“The United Nations is man’s
own test of his compatability with
global living. It was created as
much out of necessity, as out of
human hope, to repel the dangers
of self-destruction that confront
mankind in our shrinking, satel-
