UNITED NATIONSS, (AJP)—
A veteran Foreign correspondent
who has spent a considerable
time in Cairo and Africa—stood
only several feet away from
Nasser when he delivered his
world-shaking Suez Canal Na
tionalization speech and who has
seen him at close range on nu
merous occasions—told your cor
respondent this week that the
20th centure Pharaoh of the Nile
is, in reality, a true “Dr. Jekell
and Mr. Hyde” multiplied a
hundred times. Possessing the
peculiar faculty of being able to
fit himself into any circum
stance, he can put on such a
strangely sadistic charm as to
completely beguile whoever he
decides to bewitch. Hence his
successes at home and abroad.
But these peculiarly mystic
“virtues,” added the non-Jewish
correspondent, do not bespeak
well for Nasser. They brand him
as the deceiver who plays his
part with perfection.
Like the Chameleon—the liz
ard that changes its colors with
the different surroundings — so
Nasser is capable of changing
his whole disposition—even facial
expressions and mannerism—to
the need of the moment without
giving anyone the opportunity of
Hungary Claims
Freedom for
Jews Today
NEW YORK, (AJP)—The Le
gation of the Hungarian Govern
ment here released an article
this week on the situation of
the Jewish communities in the
Soviet-dominated State.
Written by Andre Sos who, as
the release states, “is President
of the Hungarian Israelite Rep
resentation and a member of the
Executive of the World Jewish
Congress,” the article recounts
what “happened to Jews in Hun
gary since 1945.”
Declaring that “not one major
war criminal who had murdered
or harmed Jews had escaped
punshment,” Mr. Sos adds: “The
Jews who remained alive were
able to carry on their religious
life and build up their commun
al organizations until the inter
ruption of the 1956 counter-revo
lution. Then,” he continues,
“hidden fascists started a pro-
gram-like wave of persecution.”
Mr. Sos reveals in his article
that “today Hungarian Jewry can
be estimated at 80,000 who en
joy complete freedom of religion.
The most valuable minds of
Hungarian Jewry can be found
in the presidium,” he adds. Sos
then goes on to name a number
of famous scientists, writers and
physicians. “Regular Jewish ser
vices are held in Budapest in
thirty synagogues,” Sos stresses.
“At the Budapest Rabbi Train
ing Institute, at the head of
which is Dr. Sandor Scheiber
the world famous scientist, scien
tific work and teaching is car
ried on, the effect of which is
also being enjoyed by Jews of
neighboring countries.”
The Sos article goes on to
point out that rabbis and repre
sentatives of Jewish communities
can travel freely abroad.

knowing his real inner self.
It is in this intrinsic nature of
the dictator of the United Arab
Republic wherein lies the real
peril to the State of Israel. For
whenever Secretary General Dag
Hammarskjold visits him on any
question relating to Palestine,
Nasser puts on his angelic colors
to match those of the UN em
blem of love and peace. These
appear to be the only colors the
blond Scandinavian neutral sees
and, fully beguiled, he returns
to headquarters the optimist, not
realizing that the chameleon
changed colors upon his depart
ure and that, as a result, blood
and more friction ensues.
The case of Lebanon is a per
fect example.
But Nasser’s de ep secret is
Israel—to over-power and de
stroy it whenever Lebanon and
Jordan fall into his grip. He
plans not to move until he has
the “vise” firmly fixed on three
sides with subs on the fourth
side. To accomplish this his dark
scheme he counts on support
from the Soviet Union.
It is in the light of the above
New Mexico Boys
Getting Bar Mitzvah
The Hard Way
PHOENIX, (JTA) — The sons
of the Lehman family of Lords-
burg, the only Jewish family in
that New Mexico town, really
believe in going a long way to
get their Bar Mitzvahs.
Sam has logged 7,000 miles
traveling to Tucson for a week
ly lesson of preparation for the
ceremony and one final trip last
week for the event.
The trip was made possible by
agreement of the Lordsburg
school principal to let Sam off
early so he could catch a bus
to Tucson each Friday afternoon.
From February through June,
Sam made the weekly trip,
studying with Irving Mailinsky
of Congregation Anshei Israel.
He stayed with his grandpar
ents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Gold,
each weekend, boarding a bus
Sunday for the 160-mile return
trip to Lordsburg.
An older brother made the
same trip two years ago for the
same purpose. Two years from
now a third Lehman boy will
make it three in a row.
facts that your correspondent
was amazed to find most editori
al writers and news analysts
viewing the recent Nasser-Tito
meeting with optimism. All ap
peared to think that Col. Nasser
was going the way of Tito. Time
Magazine wrote that he “was
making the most audacious af
front to the Soviets he had ever
risked.”
Nothing could be further from
the truth. Again Nasser was the
Chameleon. But more than that.
Also the fox. Readers of this
column may be assured that by
now the Kremlin has a full re
port of everything that trans
pired between Tito and Nasser
in private and that the “master-
spy” in the case was none other
than the paranoiac chameleon
himself who decided, after leav
ing Tito, that it would be to
Egypt’s advantage to inform
Khrushchev of the real inten
tion of the Truant Tito.
The Soviets, however, knowing
all the chaldean-Egyptian tricks
of witchcraft, sees through Nas
ser. Hence they play his game—
a rather “even” game. Nasser be
lieves he has nothing to lose
even under future Soviet-domi
nated Middle East where he will
be permitted to rule over all
Arabs—an eventuality, he knows,
could never come about without
Moscow’s aid.
Meanwhile, with the split in
the Arab world and with Le
banon standing at the crossroads,
Israel enjoys a respite from in
filtration and marauding—a bad
ly-needed breathing-spell during
this Tenth Anniversary year.
But the Israeli leaders, alert to
the constant threats and perils,
are keeping their military ma
chine in readiness for momen
tary action. For they have a
“Dr. Jekell and Mr. Hyde” on
their doorstep and there’s no
telling when the monster will
decide to strike.
