AM SUMMER REVIEW
AJCC Day Camp
Marks Israels
Tenth Anniversary
Special to The Southern Israelite
In conjunction with Israel’s
Tenth Anniversary celebration,
campers at the AJCC’s Ajecomce
Day Camp are learning how'
Israelis live through participa
tion in the central theme of “Is
rael—You are There.”
Careful integration of the daily
camping program with the theme
has resulted in a variety of ac
tivities, punctuated by imaginary
visits to Israel. The youngest
children pretend they are doc
tors, farmers, or teachers living
on a kibbut, while the six-
year olds participate as ship
builders or the “big people” of
the teeming city life of Haifa.
The older children are helping to
build Israel’s economy by work
ing in the Negev, where they
find participation in irrigation
engineering a rewarding experi
ence. Things are never dull, as
the Negev workers took a break
to water-ski on the “Dead Sea,”
conveniently supplied by a rain
puddle on the camp site.
The Shabbat programs are
particularly effective as a means
of enjoyable instruction and
theme coordination. A few weeks
ago, the Haifa citizens proudly
took the rest of the camp on a
tour of their city, guiding the
interested tourists through the
Technion and on a visit to the
Habima players. Previous Shab
bat trips have included tree
planting in the Negev and a tour
of an Israeli kibbutz. For these
tours the children prepare very
effective props in their arts and
crafts groups.
As part of the “Israel—You
are There” theme, the children
participate in Israeli national
dances and songs. Each group in
the camp has its own special
songs, which are vigorously
sung as a means of identifica
tion.
Pre-Schoolers Conclude
Successful Summer
Some eighty 3-5 year old boys
and girls said goodbye to their
friends and counselors on July
25th. For six happy weeks they
played, swam and learned many
things while enjoying a group
experience with their peers.
Many of their parents visited
throughout the camping period
to see the progress their children
were making in swimming as
well as in other areas of this
program. This activity was de
signed especially to meet the
needs of the pre-school age
youngster.
Now the regular Nursery
School staff—Mrs. Cohen, Mrs.
Frankel and Mrs. Kranz, work
ing under Mrs. Sacks’ direction,
are preparing for the regular
fall and winter session. This ses
sion begins the wek of Septem
ber 8th for all new children and
on September 17th for returning
children.
Parents are again reminded
that applications for 1959 may
be made at the reception desk
whenever the Center is open. A
$10.00 deposit is required.

Ronn Government
Wants U.S. To Come
To Terms With Nasser
BONN, (JTA)—West Germany
feels strongly that the United
States and Britain are backing
the wrong horse in the Middle
East, and that the West “must
come to terms” with United
Arab Republic President Gamal
Nasser, it was reported here to
day.
The German press points out
that the Iraqi regime has shown
a most friendly disposition to
West Germany and that there
are many German technicians in
the entire Middle East. It is ob
served here that many of the
leaders of the controlling junta
in the new Iraq government
are known for their pro-German
sentiments.
