PLAIN TALK—By Alfred Segal
Mr. Goldberg Reports on His Name
In the South African Jewish
Times (Johannesburg) I find a
story about many of the Jews in
Israel taking on new names,
more Hebraic than the names
they’ve been carrying all their
lives and which their grand
parents carried . . . such fancy
old Germanic names like Gold
berg, Greenberg, Blumenthal,
Goldstein, etc., etc., etc.
This Johannesburg Jewish pa
per was saying: ‘‘The Finkel-
steins, the Rabinowitzes and
Goldbergs arc a vanishing breed
in Israel. Names of bygone times
such as Green and Shimshilevitz
do not arouse a spark of recogni
tion among Israelis. Prime Min
ister David Ben Gurion was born
David Green. President Yitzhok
Ben Zvi was born Yitzhok Shim-
shiletvitz.”
I was reporting this to one of
the Goldbergs in our town. Mr.
Goldberg didn’t feel resentful at
all toward any of the regretful
Goldbergs in Israel who have
been taking names more fitting
to their new lives . . .“Goldberg,”
he said, “is another one of those
names that really doesn’t mean
so much to the Jewish being . . .
all that kind of names, like
Rosenthal, Rosenheim, Green
berg; though you must admit
they are poetically beautiful
enough. Tell me, Segal, what
can be prettier than a gold berg,
a golden hill, that is. You know
how I came to be Goldberg?”
“Please tell me,” I urged him.
“Well,” he replied, “it all goes
back to the early years of the
19th century when my ancestors
were living in one of the king
doms that later was to come to
gether as the German nation. I
don’t know the exact place
where my people lived there.
You know how we all had to
wander around . . . from here to
there and from there to here. So
there’s really no place to call a
beginning of a Jewish life.”
“I don’t know the original
name of my ancestor who got
our family started toward being
Goldbergs. He did carry a name
out of the Old Testament ... a
name like Yitchok ben Moshe or
Jakov ben Yoshe. But then the
time came when such names no
longer were approved by the
rulers of those Germany king
doms. They felt that residents of
any amendments to said chapters
which may be made In the future are
which may have been made and
hereby made a part hereof tn the
same extent as If same were Incorpo
rated herein.
3.
The amount of the capital with
which said corporation shall begin
business shall be a minimum of Two
Thousand ($2,000.00) Dollars, in cash
or other assets, each share to have a
par value of One Hundred ($100.00)
Dollars, with the privileges of Increas
ing tho capital stock to the sum of
Seventy Five Thousand ($75,000.00) Dol
lars.
4.
Petitioners desire the right to In
crease or decrease their stock within
the authorized limits by vote of the
majority of the outstanding common
stock and to have the further right
to issue fractional shares of stock.
5.
The principal office of the corpora
tion Is to be located In the County of
Fulton, State of Georgia, but petition
ers desire the privilege of establish
ing branch offices In places of busi
ness elsewhere.
WHEREFORE, petitioners pray that
an Order be granted incorporating
them, their associates, successors and
assigns, under the name aforesaid with
the powers and privileges herein pray
ed for, together with such other
powers and privileges as may be neces
sary, proper or incident to the con
duct of the business for which peti
tioners are seeking Incorporation, and
as may be allowed to private corpora
tions under the terms of the Act of
January 28th, 1938, authorizing the
chartering of corporations.
And your petitioners will ever pray.

ORDER

having been presented to the court,
and the same having been examined,
and It appearing to the undersigned
Judge of said court that the applica

tificate of the Secretary of State that
the name of the proposed corporation

Dated this 9th day of July, 1958.
RALPH H. PHARR
Judge, S.C-A.C.
their lands should carry names
with a German sound. In £act,
Jews were made to take new
names not only in those German
kingdoms, but also in Austria,
including Galicia.”
“The government authorities
took fees for the new names
they allowed the Jew's to take . .
the pleasanter the sound of the
name, the more it cost. The high
est price was for names like my
own, Goldberg, or for other
names that carried “gold” or the
smell of flowers, liken Rosen
thal or Rosenbaum, or Gold
stein.”
“Others who couldn’t pay
much for a new name had to
take such as Stahl or Eisen . . .
which, of course, were humbler
titles than of us who were the
Goldbergs, the Rosenbergs, the
Blumenthals, etc. The very poor
who couldn’t afford to pay any
thing for a new name had to
take Hasenpfeffer or Knack-
wurst.”
“So my better-to-do ancestor
was able to buy himself a name
so pretty as Goldberg to attach
to us. I have romantically fig
ured out how it came about.
There was an autumn day when
my ancestor whom I shall call
ben Yitzhok ben Moshe was
worried as to just what new
name to take for himself. He
looked upward toward a high
hill. Its trees looked golden in
the colors that October puts on
trees. My ancestor exclaimed
with poetic fancy, “t’s so golden
. . . a golden hill! What a lovely
name that will be for me . . .
Goldberg! . . . Yes, that shall be
the name of me and my chil
dren from here on through their
generations.”
“Well, Segal, I don’t know
what he had to pay for a
name all golden and high
as a hill, you might say, but it
must have been a tidy sum.
Thus, too, the Silversteins, the
Silvermans and the Silverblatts
got their shining titles. And that
is the story of Goldberg.”
Well, I myself felt as privi
leged as Goldberg to shine
brightly in the glamor of my
own name . . . Segal, that is.
“Mr. Goldberg,” I said, “do
you know where Segel comes
from?”
“Tell me, please,” he replied.
“Well,” I began, “Segal goes
back not just to a golden hill
on an October day of some 150
years ago. Yes, Goldberg, Segal
is from more than 2000 years
back. The name Segal is a con
traction of the Hebrew “segan
halevi” and you know what that
means, I presume?”
“Yes, I know,” he replied. “It
means “chief of the Levites.” So
that’s what you are . . . chief of
the Levites. That sounds higher
than a Goldberg which really is
no higher than a hill.”
“That’s me,” I said. “I know
this true identity of mine by the
authority of a professor at the
Hebrew Union College who set
me up on this high spot when I
was a student under him ever so
long ago. That’s me . . .Segal . .
Segan halevi.
“You see, Mr. Goldberg, when
my ancestors had to take new
names they went back all the
way to the time when a fore
father of his was chief of the
Levites in the Temple of Jeru
salem and Segan halevi, that is.
So he brought together segan
halevi to make Segal. Yes, that’s
us.”
Mr. Goldberg seemed to de
scend humbly from his golden
hill; he looked up respectfully
at this Segal, this segan halevi,
and bought me a drink of sherry
at the Wheel bar.
Looking again at the Jewish
Times of Johannesburg, I am re
minded by it that Israel’s For
eign Minister Golda Meir (Meir
is Hebrew) used to be Golda
Myerson of Milwaukee. And
there’s a prominent Israeli who
started out as Kleinbaum which
in German means small bush.
He translated “bush” into He
brew “sneh” and now he’s known
as Moshe Sneh.
