JIM BOWEN
Commissioner

Third District
Recent advertisements in our
DeKalb County newspapers pro
claim that an “EXPERIENCED
POLITICIAN” has done wonder
ful things for DeKalb County.
We know you will not be misled
by this extravagant and com
pletely misleading type of ad
vertising.
Now, let’s look at the facts.
Are we to believe that our
“EXPERIENCED POLITICIAN”
does not know the figures he
quoted as to the money DeKalb
has received from the State High
way Department are phoney?
Does he expect DeKalb citizens
to believe that these vast sums
were spent on DeKalb County
roads? We taxpayers know that,
unless these roads were paved
with gold instead of the thin
layer of asphalt, which is the
case, this amount of money could
not possibly have been used as
stated. Are we to believe this
“EXPERIENCED POLITICIAN”
does not know what every other
citizen knows—that there is al
most criminal waste in our road
department?
Does it take an “EXPERI
ENCED POLITICIAN” to be
satisfied with the incompetent
and arrogant Tax Assessors with
which our county is burdened?
We are not surprised by the
fact that this “EXPERIENCED
POLITICIAN” does not know
what is happening in our county
government inasmuch as he has
been unwilling, unable, or not
interested enough to represent
you in FIFTEEN Commission
meetings in the last nineteen
months.
Facts are facts and we feel
sure you will be interested in
the following:
DeKalb County sold 56,918,319
gallons of gasoline in 1957. The
State tax on gasoline is 6Vz% per
gallon. Therefore DeKalb paid
to the State $3,699,690.73. This
money, under our State Consti
tution, goes to the Highway De-
f artment for road construction,
n addition, Federal Highway
funds allocated to Georgia for
the same year amounted to
$46,527,280.00. DcKalb’s share of
these funds should have been
approximately $3,000,000.00. The
gasoline tax which we paid and
our share of the Federal funds
should have amounted to ap
proximately $6,500,000,00.
ACTUALLY RECEIVE IN
1957? The GRAND Total of
$658,716. Compare this with
$3,586,316.00, which is the
amount DeKalb received from
the State Highway Department
in 1955. You will agree that we
could have used the money we
did not get in 1957 to pave a few
more miles of the “six-month”
variety roads that are being laid
in DeKalb. Perhaps, if this
“EXPERIENCED POLITICIAN"
had been on the job, as the
voters had a right to expect him
to be, he could have used a
little of his so-called “EXPERI
ENCE” in securing DeKalb’s
share of these funds to which
we were justly entitled.
ELECT JIM BOWEN
YOUR COMMISSIONER
Jim Bowen, a continuously
successful DeKalb businessman
for thirty-two years, a man who
has never profited by the use
of the taxpayer’s money to de
velop his property, will not be
tray your trust by neglecting his
duties in office but will attend
all meetings and earnestly and
diligently represent your inter
ests in good county government.
He will stop the slipshod and
unjust methods of raising home
tax assessments by riding down
a street and raising assessments
without getting out of their auto
mobiles.
He will see that every citizen
receives courteous consideration
in dealings with county officers
and personnel.
There are many capable and
efficient people in Your employ
in DeKalb County. Let’s make it
unanimous and weed out the
Few rude and incompetent peo
ple who are attempting to ruin
our county.
A vote for
Jim Bowen
on Wednesday, September 10,
will be a vote for courteous
treatment and efficient and ef
fective county government in
DeKalb. Polls open 7 A.M. and
close 7 P.M.
