NEW YEAR MESSAGE
Prospect for Peace
BY RABBI JOSEPH COHEN

715 Edgewood Ave., N.E.f
The old year of 5718 is gone,
with the prospects for world
peace becoming dimmer. In
recorded history it is shown
that upon the closing of the
two world wars and intermit
tent battles we maintained a
sure belief that international
bloody conflicts were coming
to an end. But, we realize that
actually we live in a time of
complex problems and confus
ion. Humanity has always
dreamt that such a day would
dawn. A warless society was
the hope and promise of Is
rael’s prophets and the utopia
of our prayerful fathers. A
firm belief that our genera
tion would behold the foot
prints of the Messiah of peace,
total peace. But, what a dis
appointment!
In the midst of the jubilant
celebration of the first decade
of Israel’s independence, the
world is stunned with the
Middle East crisis struck on
July 14. We Jews, in particu
lar, felt deeply concerned
with the future of the dynam
ically developed Israel,
though the immediate threat
involves the big powers. We
could hear the crash of the
Tablets of peace. The harsh
echo of those broken tablets

is heard all over the world.
We heard angry words by the
leaders of many nations, de
nunciations, calls for hostility
and punishment, military pre
paredness and movements.
Yet, courageously and hope
fully we look ahead for the
year 5719 with our prayers
and greetings all over the
world: MAY WE BE IN
SCRIBED IN THE BOOK OF
LIFE.
What is the purpose of life?
We should begin to picture a
world in which the discoveries
of religion and science are
fully utilized. Our energies
should be devoted to searching
the secrets of nature in or
der to enrich our life, and to
continue the struggle against
the physical and psychological
diseases that plague us. We
should strive to create a world
of harmony, of real peace.
The love for life, for a moral
life with a sublime purpose is
our prophetical heritage. It
is this love of meaningful life
that enabled our fathers to
transform the most cruel
existence into a life filled
often with harmony and nob
ility. It should lead us to re
new our interest in the im
portant values of life, such as
study, service to our neighbor,
etc. Our lives will become
more complete, and we shall
also hasten the day of peace
and sanity, and of a decent
world. It is with our belief on
the guidance of G-d, on the
Providential G-d, that justice
will inevitably triumph.
We sound the Shofar on
Rosh Hashanah to awaken the
slumbering spirit, to open the
soul’s eye that man may see
and have the courage to be.
To each Jew everywhere Rosh
Hashanah offers another
chance. To each of us, these
Holy Days again open the door
to a meaningful purposeful
life. And at this hour in the
titanic human struggle be
tween two contradictory
world - philosophies, Judaism
commends this belief to the
free world. Today survival it
self depends upon the accept
ance of these Jewish values.
If we cleave to G-d, our lives
will be worthwhile and valu
able. This is the utterance of
Moses in his farewell sermon
to the children of Israel:
“Veatem Tadvekim Bahhash-
em Elokechem Hayim Kul-
chem Hayom—Ye that Cleave
Unto the Lord your G-d, are
alive every one of you this
day.”
Therefore let us rise and
reach out to G-d. Rosh Hash
anah means renewal, regen
eration, re-creation. We, with
our regenerative potential,
with our high intelligence,
great moral capacity, can mas
ter the destructive passions
of the human, and are able to
rebuild the world’s well
being. As the waters of the
flood of Noah were abated,
and as Moses ascended to Si
nai to acquire the Second
Tablets of love as of law, we
take courage and character
that through our sincere pray
ers, the broken and irritated
relationship of the world will
be restored through under
standing and forgiveness. We
pray that G-d might show us
His radiant light to illuminate
the world and Israel with the
rays of an enduring peace.
With this hope and faith, I
extend to my fellow members
and coreligionists the sincere
wishes of a very Happy New
Year of 5719, a year of con
tentment and felicity. Les-
hanah Tova Tikatevu. May
you he inscribed in the Book
of Life.
