It is indeed a pleasure to in a half kopeck. The Serv-

eve of the New Year.
You may be familiar with
the oft - quoted tale of the
Chasidic rabbi who, accom
panied by the sexton, passed
the charity box at the en
trance to the Synagogue. The
rabbi watched the sexton put

physical or sensory heritages.
Let these rather be gifts of
sincerity and devotion; ex
changes of mutual under
standing and compassion; the
glow of a smile, the handclasp
of filial piety and neighborly
friendship.
When our Heavenly Father
visualizes us entering His
House with our personal gifts
unto each other, He will surely
say, “My children, You have
brought in much. I shall let
you take out even more.”
ices were concluded, the con
gregants departed, each of
course passing the charity
box. The rabbi and sexton
were the last to leave, and the
box was opened. The half
kopeck was the solitary coin
there.
“You see, my son,” remark
ed the rabbi to the sexton, “If
you would put in more, you’d
be taking out more.”
Within a few days, we shall
stand before the portals of
Heaven to ask for a year of
happiness. We shall come
bearing gifts of repentance,
prayer and charity.
To these principles do we
ordinarily dedicate our sup
plications and petitions. These
acts of devotion, relating be
tween God and ourselves, are
within our comprehension.
These implorations we voice
with candor. In response to
these supplications to the Di
vine, the answer may simply
be, “If you’ll put in a little
more, you’ll be taking out a
little more.”
Isn’t there another vital
factor which should be ser
iously considered? Even Yom
Kippur forgives only those
sins between God and Man.
No prayer or supplication
can supplant the personal re
lationship between Man and
his fellow being. Before Kol
Nidre it is obligatory to beg
forgiveness, to rectify, and to
make redress for the hurts,
the pains, the pangs and the
stings which we brought on
Bein Odom La Chaveiro—to
our neighbors.
From the fathomless well
which is our heart, can we not
draw up the living waters of
human compassion and broth
erly understanding?
There are myriads of gifts
available to mankind, begging
to be taken, and proffered.
Within the grasp of each hu
man being is the secret of
happiness, the rainbow’s end
to the seemingly never end
ing mortal yearning, and the
answer to the prayers most
often unspoken; for these are
not printed in the prayer
book.
So let us reassemble before
the Heavenly Throne on Rosh
Hashonah with humility,
bearing before Him our pray
ers and our hopes. But let us,
moreover, come laden with
gifts for each other—not mon
etary or pecuniary gifts; not
