NEW YEAR MESSAGE
Reappraisal
BY RABBI SYDNEY K. MOSSMAN
Spiritual Leader
Congregation Shearith Israel
The atomic age has not only judge, to understand
coined new scientific expres
sions but new diplomatic ones
well
all mankind with His eternal
peace.
as well. Of these the most
frequently used is agonizing
reappraisal. Every quiver on
the world’s political oceans
causes an immediate wave of
reappraisal. Every quiver on
may be new to the world yet
to the Jew the phrase is an
old, old one for how else
would one explain the mean
ing of ‘‘Cheshbon Hanefesh”
but the agonizing reappraisal
of the soul—the reappraisal
of one’s thoughts, deeds and
accomplishments.
Agonizing reappraisal —
Rosh Hashonah and Yom
Kippur—the nights of Slichos
—the long hours in the syna
gogue—the deep contempla
tion of the very essence of
living — Cheshbon Hanefesh,
the reappraisal of the soul.
These Solemn Days are the
ones most devoted to intro
spection. We search the deep
est and delve the furthest as
we agonizingly reappraise the
passing year seeking to under
stand what we have been,
what we are, and where we
are going. There is no aspect
of life that makes us stop and
reflect as does the shadow on
the sun dial, the sweep of the
second hand, the ticking of
the clock. On Rosh Hashonah
and Yom Kippur we are most
conscious of passing time and
as a result we are thrust into
the vortex of the seething
whirlpool of agonizing reap
praisal. Suddenly we stand
face to face with reality.
Whether it is grim or smiling
depends completely on the re
sults of our appraisal.
Has there been change or
only monotony? Has there
been aspiration or only smug
ness? Has there been climb
ing or only standing still? Is
the passing time purposeful
or a mockery? From our an
swers to these will come our
own reappraisal.
In the world at large agon
izing reappraisal means lit
erally the assessment of pre
sent actions in the light of
new circumstances. Countries
rise and fall on this judgment.
So it is with human beings
for our lives too depend on
our ability to appraise, to
and to
think through what we are
and what we can be. It is
this or else it is nothing. This
then is the meaning of the
coming High Holydays: the
pause, the penetrating think
ing, the deepest soul search
ing, the agonizing reappraisal
and the man that emerges.
At the same time I cannot
help but share with the entire
Jewish community my great
joy in our new Shearith Is
rael Synagogue. I become ec
static at the mere thought of
its beauty and splendor. We
were blessed in having an in
spired architect to draw up
the plans and follow them
through to fulfillment. With
G--d’s help he managed to
grasp that moment’s inspira
tion that alone can make a
builder of stone, mortar and
steel a true House of G-d. For
this is what we now possess,
a shrine to G-d, a House of
Prayer unto all people, an un
paralleled addition to the
accomplishments of Atlanta
Jewry of which this gem-like
synagogue is its proudest dia
dem.
May this coming year be
for all of us a year of ach
ievement and satisfaction.
May it bring to all of us good
health and gracious living.
May this year mark the be
ginning of mankind’s fullfill-
ment of establishing justice,
truth and righteousness upon
earth. May G-d bless us and
