Christian-Jewish-Moslem
Mission of Friendship
NEW YORK, (AJP)—After a
series of dramatic events in the
Holy Land, climaxed by an his
toric prayer service at the top
of the highest mountain around
Jerusalem (on the eve of the
recent United Nations General
Assembly emergency meeting),
in which Christians, Jews and
Moslems Joined together, a plane
load of 80 members of these three
great religions returned last week
from a month-long “Mission of
Friendship” to Europe and the
Middle East. The journey was
made under the auspices of the
Interfaith Committee For Peace
In The Holy Land which has
its headquarters in the Labor
Temple Fellowship World
Friendship Center at 302 Ashland
Place, Brooklyn, New York.
The pilgrimage was headed by
the Rev. Dr. Richard E. Evans,
nationally known crusader for
human rights and freedom of all
peoples, who is Chairman of the
Interfaith Committee and Presi
dent of the Labor Temple Fel
lowship. It was the fourth such
“Mission of Friendship" which
Dr. Evans has led. Other leaders
on the journey were Dr. Morris
Berger, President of the Queens
Dental Society, Dr. Benjamin
Leavin, builder of the Four
Chaplains Pool, Dr. Mohammed

Kazim, Moslem teacher of New
York, and notably, Dr. Sarah E.
Dickson, foster mother of Dr.
Evans and first woman Elder in
the history of the Presbyterian
Church, who made her fourth
such pilgrimage in a wheelchair.
The central feature of the
journey was a ten - day trip
through Israel taken by a spec
ial delegation to further the plans
for the Committee’s “Pillar of
Peace” project, the symbol orig
inally created by Dr. Leavin,
which has been widely hailed
both here and abroad. Besides
those already named, the delega
tion included Dr. and Mrs. Irving
Lederman and Dr. and Mrs. Al
bert Sarnow.
The highlight of this pilgrim
age was the historic prayer serv
ice held at the top of the high
est mountain around Jerusalem
(Mt. Orah near Ain Karem) on
Sunday afternoon, August 10th,
on the eve of the United Nations,
Genera] Assembly emergency
meeting on the Middle East. At
this service Christians, Jews and
Moslems gathered under the lead
ership of Dr. Evans and with each
following the traditions of his
own faith, joined together in
prayer for peace in the Holy
Land and throughout the world,
and for divine guidance upon the
forth-coming deliberations of the
United Nations. A message to that
effect was cabled to Sir Leslie
Munro, President of the U. N. and
the Hon. Dag Hammarskjold, its
Secretary General. Sir Leslie
Munro had talked with Dr. Evans
and his foster mother informally
at the United Nations prior to
their departure and expressed his
deep personal interest in and
warm approval of the “Mission
of Friendship” and “Pillow of
Peace” project.
Other features of the Com
mittee's visit to Israel were re
ceptions rendered them in Jeru
salem by the Ministry of Relig
ion, the Foreign Ministry and
Mayor Gershon Agron; in Tel-
Aviv by U. S. Ambassador Ed
ward B. Lawson and Mayor
Chaim Levanon; in Haifa by
Chief Rabbi Nissim Ouchanna and
by the B'ahai Movement under

the leadership of Mr. Paul Haney;
in Nazareth by the venerable
“Kadi”, head of the Moslem com
munity, and by the hundred-
year-old Scotch Presbyterian Hos
pital where, as in previous years,
the Committee delivered hospital
supplies for the healing of its
Christian, Jewish and Moslem
patients. Besides attending these
and many similar official func
tions, the Committee, as in other
years, visited Christian, Jewish
and Moslem centers and spoke,
not only with scores of leaders
of all faiths, but with hundreds
of ordinary, every-day citizens in
city streets, country roads, vil
lages, farms and homes through
out the land, all of whom warm
ly hailed the Committee’s efforts
for peace.
All the events on the Commit
tee’s itinerary were carried out
under the direction of its Chair
man for Israel, the Hon. Julius
Salpeter of Tel-Aviv, with the
cooperation of Dr. Samuel Z.
Kahana, head of the Office of the
Ministry of Religion and the as
sistance of Messrs. H. J. Witkow-
er and E. W. Baumann, the Com
mittee’s architects, and other
members. On its return home, the
Committee held important con
ferences with religious and civic
leaders in Paris, Milan, Venice,
Brussels and especially in Lon
don where Dr. Evans met with
Mr. Arthur Young, Mr. Anthony
Brooke and Mr. Patrick Hamilton
of the Layman’s Trust Society,
Prof. Norman Bentwich, and oth
er leaders of the Christian. Jew
ish, Moslem Friendship Society
in Britain, and also with the
Archbishop of Jerusalem. All
these leaders expressed keen in
terest in the Committee’s “Pil
lar of Peace" project. The land
arrangements for the pilgrimage
were in charge of Mr. Harry
Brown of Embassy Tours and the
plane was chartered from Over
seas National Airways.
Under the Mission’s return, Dr.
Evans stated, “We feel this has
been by far our best pilgrimage.
We were deeply impressed with
Israel’s achievements and the fine
spirit of her people. We appreciate
greatly the splendid cooperation
of the Hon. Julius Salpeter, Dr.
Samuel Z. Kahana, and many
others in making our "Pillar of
Peace” project a living program
designed to prove that in the
true spirit, of religion, people of
these historic faiths to which this
land is holy can, despite the pol
itical, economical and militaiy
difficulties, work together to
create a “climate of understand
ing” in which these problems can
be solved, and thus help bring
peace, not only to the Holy Land
but to all mankind.”
