Rosh Ilashonah Statement from Army
Lt. General Clark L. Ruffner, Third U.S. Army Commander,
shakes hand with Herbert It. Elsas, Area Chairman of the National
Jewish Welfare Board, in appreciation for the work of JWB in be
half of Jewish personnel, when he publicly released the following
Rosh Hashonnh statement:
“With full knowledge of the significance that the occasion holds
for them, I extend to all men and women of the Jewish faith assign
ed to the Third United States Army every best wish for the coming
High Holy Days.
“The festivals of Rosh Ilashonah and Yom Kippur, the New
Year and the Day of Atonement, will be given the full solemn
observance they merit at all Third Army installations. Ail of you
are, of course, most welcome to participate in services at your in
stallations, but I hope that many of you will find it possible to at
tend synagogues and temples at home, in the company of your own
families.
“To the Jewish Welfare Board I extend sincere and heartfelt
appreciation for their splendid work in assisting Jewish personnel
of Third Army in many ways during the year just past. And to
them as well as to each of you I wish every success and happiness
for this and all the coming New Years. May they continue to see
us fulfill our mission of safeguarding the world from tyranny and
of preserving peace for free men everywhere.”
