young man with mournful blue
eyes. When he was 11 years old,
he was brought to England by the
Save the Children Fund in the
last transport to come out of Ger
many before the outbreak of
World War II. His parents put
his 7 year old brother in his
care. He never heard from his
parents again.
Manny was working as a lab
oratory assistant in a leather fac
tory when the War of Liberation
began. He immediately decided
to come over and fight.
“I wasn’t a Zionist,” he said,
“not at all.”
“Then why did you want to
come and fight for Israel?” I
asked him.
“I wanted to help build up the
country," he replied.
“Doesn’t that make you a
Zionist?”
“Oh, no,” he said seriously. “A
Zionist is someone who stays in
England talking and giving mon
ey.”
Things have worked out fine
for Manny ever since he got to
Israel. He came through the two
Negev offensives without a
scratch, and as soon as he left the
Army, he was offered a job as as
sistant chemist at Taya Cosmetic
Co. Here he immediately found a
wife, and discovered an unsus
pected knack for making cos
metics and mixing perfumes.
Mixing perfumes intrigues him
most. “You can’t learn it,” he
told me. “It all depends on your
nose and experience."
The text books don’t help much
either, because any good product
is a top secret. It can only be ap
proximated, or stumbled on by
some chance combination of in
gredients.
Manny was hard at work when
I visited the Taya laboratory
near Tel Aviv recently. It wasn’t
what ordinarily be regarded as
work, for Manny was just sitting
and sniffing at bottles. He’d sniff
first at one bottle, then at anoth
er. Then he sat and thought for
a bit, glancing over a sheet of
paper on which were written
names of ingredients and quanti
ties. Every so often he added a
few drops from one of the bot
tles into a central one. When he
smelled this perfume bottle, he
seemed almost cheerful. But in
variably when he smelled the
perfume in the tiny bottle, he

grew mournful again. This had
been going on for three months.
Manny was attempting what
perfumers all over the world are
always aming at. He was trying
to create a new perfume on the
French style. The perfume in the
tiny bottle, which he was using
as his guide, was a world-fam
ous perfume. The perfume in the
central bottle was Manny’s own
product. He produced pints of
mixture before he achieved that
particular blend. Always it seem
ed that just one more ingredient
would produce that subtle, luxur
ious mellowness. There was no
way of knowing what would be
the effect of the additional in
gredient until it had been added,
and then frequently it was too
late. Manny would have to start
all over again.
Before I knew it, I had entered
into the spirit of the thing. For
half an hour 1 sat beside, him,
smelling the little bottle, and
then smelling Manny’s latest mix
ture. Not bad. Not bad at all.
Then another smell at the little
bottle. No, not yet. Still too raw.
What produced that subtle, lux
urious mellowness?
How long does it take to create
a new perfume, I wondered.
“How long does it take to com
pose a piece of music ’’ Manny
answered. “You might hit on it
right away, or might take a year.”
You shouldn’t work at a per
fume too steadily. Just a few
hours every three days. But if it
haunts you like that little bot
tle haunts Manny, waiting for
three days is a terrible long time.
What does produce that subtle,
luxurious mellowness? Perhaps
Manny’s next flash of inspiration
will appear in a few month’s
time, smartly bottled on the cos
metic counters of Israel.
