Letter to Editor
Dear Editor:
Please allow me to point out
to all of the many students and
friends of Jewish Music that the
T.V. Program “Look Up and
Live,” Sunday morning at 10:00
on Channel 5, is one of the most
wonderful programs ever pro
duced. It is a series of four illu
strated lectures devoted to the
history of Jewish Music.
The program on Sunday, Sep
tember 7, was the first of these
presentations. Those who saw
Dr. A. W. Bender of the Hebrew
Union College unfold the role
of Trop in Jewish Music will
readily agree that it was delight
fully informative and imagina
tive in the most modern sense.
I am sure that the next
two programs, will continue
with the development of Jewish
Music, will be just as exciting
—Dr. Nathan Glazer
500,000 Children in
Israel Schools
JERUSALEM, (JTA)—Half a
million Israeli school-children in
cluding 44,000 Arabs and 50,000
new pupils, registered for school
this week. The end of the vaca
tion found 900 new teachers at
classroom desks, 60 additional
Arab teachers in state schools
for Arab children.
One thousand new classrooms
were put into service, providing
seating space for over 40,000
pupils. More than another 1,000
units must still be constructed to
provide for 50,000'children still
on a “second shift” in various
schools around the country.
Bar Ilan Names
First Woman Assistant
Professor of Bible
TEL AVIV, (JTA)—The first
woman instructor at Bar Ilan
University at Ramat Gan was
named here this week. She is
Dr. Nehema Leibowitz who be
comes assistant professor of
Bible and Education at this
religiously-oriented institution.
Dr. Leibowitz was last year
awarded the Israel Prize for re
search in education. Her weekly
bulletin on Bible study has
over 3,000 readers throughout
the world, it was announced this
week.
Sixth Century Mosaic
Floor Excavated
JERUSALEM, (JTA)—A large
mosaic floor dating back to the
sixth century C.E. has been un
earthed at excavations in the
southern Negev, it was revealed
here.
The floor, approximately 15 by
30 feet, was recovered near the
site of the ancient Byzantine
town of Shivta. Greek inscrip
tions can be made out in the
border of the mosaic.
Bonn Not to Move
Remains of Victims
Of Bergen-Behen
BONN, (JTA)—The graves of
Nazi victims at the former
Bergen- Belsen concentration
camp will not be dug up for
reinterment, as proposed by the
French Government. The denial
of the French request was an
nounced by the Foreign Ministry
with the issuance of a letter from
the Ministry to Dr. Nahum Gold-
mann, who had written a vigor
ous protest against the pain.
Dr. Goldmann, along with
many others who had protested
the disinterment plan, had point
ed out in his letter that the
great majority of the Nazi vic
tims buried in mass graves at
Bergen-Belsen were Jews and
not French nationals. Among the
protests against the French pro
posal were resolutions from
many Jewish and non-Jewish
organizations of former Nazi
victims in Israel and in other
countries.
